When we were born

Comment Published at 06:1706:173 comments3 comments17 Visits17 VisitsReport

Growing up in a family of fifteen me being the youngest there was never a dull moment in our household, each of us when we were born were Poied this is what Mum called it and Dad would take us out the door and offer us to the four corners of the earth North South East West and while doing this say these words (In the name of the father son and holy spirit amene) Mum told us that by doing this we would settle and sleep well and I and all my other 7 brothers and 7sisters even there children have carried on this tradition, as a Maori growing up in a beautiful country like NZ there were many advantages the culture oh what a wonderful culture it is, the song and dance is beautiful, the carvings the history, but and I say this with an open heart alot is lost in translation, the movie Once were Warriors opened  my eye's a little and I saw alot of this violence when alcohol was involved but take this factor away and everything is fine.I thank god that I have such a huge family now mum and dads legacy will live on in us I believe they di a fine job in raising so many of us and will always cherish them they passed away not too long ago Mum in 2004 and dad 2005 they will be missed.

Anyway my family has grown so big now that I have lost count I stopped counting at 70 because hmmm it is getting to the point where I can't even count anymore, but at age 37 I am proud to say I am a Great Grand Uncle to 4 and a Grand uncle too hmmm lost count lol maybe one day when we have a reunion I can count them all but until that day I just cherish the thought that everyone is doing well in the recession My siblings and there children all working and living well.

Re: When we were born

family tradition is very important

we are a large family so iunderstand. we are only6 brothers and sisters. my husband is 11 children . we have so many neices and nephews. great neices and nephews that we havelost count and to be honest i now need to recrd the birth dates down because the family is so big.

we have interesting weddings and christenings because even if we wanted to have a small celebration , by the time we have the family itis huge and thats without inviting friends!!!

its great to have these values hping you are carrying them on

cheers annie
