Me and My Family

Hi, Just thought I post a little about us.

I'm a single mother to my son who is nine. He lives with me during the week and his dad on weekends. I Feel like a new mum because up until earlier last year he lived with his father during the week and was with me on weekends and holidays. It's hard to get used to the whole "school" routine etc I feel like I am still fairly clueless about a lot of things but I don't know how to "reach out" to other parents for help and advice.

I don't really have any offline friends that are parents, so this place looks pretty awesome to me! It will be great to meet some other parents and get advice (and offer it) on some issues.

Hmm. What else can I say? oh, I like to call kiddo "spacemonkey" because it annoys him (in a fun way) and we love to have fun together and we play games, do puzzles and tell jokes all the time. We both love to read and do so regularly.

Umm.. guess I will update the profile a bit more when I've settled in a bit. :)

Using proper english on Minti.

Comment Published at 03:1103:114 comments4 comments40 Visits40 VisitsReport
Something that I've noticed a lot since I joined this site, is that in comments, some people seem unable type in proper English.

Example: I think u should call ur doctor and ask him what u should do. they r growing so fast and it will b too late soon.

"You" is not spelled "u".

"Are" is not spelled "r".

"You're" is not spelled "ur".

"Be" is not spelled "b".

If everyone took just a few seconds more to type the full word, comments would be a lot easier to read.

School Canteen Horror

Comment Published at 02:3502:350 comments0 comments45 Visits45 VisitsReport
Well today was the first day I volunteered at my son's school canteen. It was interesting! I learnt a lot, and did a lot too.

I am -stunned- however by what a lot of the kids bought for their recess.

I always try to give my son a healthy recess and lunch. He gets a piece of fruit every single day, and he gets a snackabout (crackers with cheese), or something similar. But a lot of these kids at the school were buying FIVE large slices of garlic bread each! I'm boggled. I have to admit, I never really noticed all that much what the canteen sells as we don't use it often. But today I made 42 chicken strips, 21 chicken nuggets, two lasagnas, a spag bolagnaise and 6 meat pies for lunches. And apparently today was a slow day. We only made three sandwiches and two salad boxes, and I only remember selling something other than garlic bread to one person, and that was only because we ran out of it!

It wasn't just the "fatty" things either. The canteen sells stuff like rice cakes, but they come packaged in with "seasoning" and guess what was in the seasoning? omg I just about died when I read the ingredients. It had MSG in it. That is so bad for kids with food allergies and who react badly to some preservatives. I shudder to think what other preservatives were in some of the things I sold today.

It's certainly made me look at the lunch order list a little closer for next time I get my son a lunch order.

We had a fun day today. Well, as much fun as one can have going to the hospital ;-)

Kiddo had an appointment to get his kidney reflux checked out at westmead childrens hospital. The last one he had was a few years ago so its good to get his medical records updated. We had an ultrasound taken a few months ago and this was the follow up with the specialist. Yes, three months later. I do appreciate that there are a lot of sick kids so they have to book in advance, but three months is a long time! Anyways, they want him to have another set of tests to check how his kidneys are functioning. So back down we go on friday! I almost fell over with shock. Just a two day wait for an appointment. I must be dreaming.

But westmead childrens hospital is a wonderful place. There is so much to keep the kids occupied through what can be a horrible process. Kiddo played on a computer for a while that had an "about my body" game on it. And we went outside to play on the play equipment for a while. They had a huge pirate ship kids could play on, complete with sails! And cubby houses and other cool stuff. There was even a bird avery. *boggles* I took photos, but I'm too tired to upload tonight.

The only complaint the whole day was that there wasn't even standing room on the train on the way home. Kiddo ended up sitting on the floor while I stood in a doorway with a dozen other people. You know how you see those images of trains in china or japan and everyone is squished in like sardines? It was like that. Seriously. People were standing all down the isles and all the seats were taken and there were a bunch of people in the entrance where the doors are.

And they say the train service has improved? pfft.

Awful time of it.

We are having a really bad morning. And evening last night. Kiddo was so angry and I'm at such a loss as to what to do. Nothing seems to work. Not even a "non reaction" from me. I stay calm and try to talk to him but it still doesnt work.

He has his anger management appt on wednesday so at least thats something. It's been six weeks since he last went because of the holidays so hopefully the appt will refresh everything he had learnt and help him with his struggle. Hopefully.

I really hope so.
