A backward step...

Comment Published at 20:5620:566 comments6 comments57 Visits57 VisitsReport

I really am at the end of my tether now with JB and his eating... he seems to have gone backwards and is now gagging and throwing up at every meal! I cannot understand why he cannot eat foods! I know I have to think of the positives and how far he has come, yet it is so frustrating when you feed him fish one day he eats it all and does so well, a couple of days later you try it again and he refuses to eat it and then throws up what little he does eat!

I feel like I am forcing him to eat the solids he does eat and I am so worried that he will constantly have a bad relationship with foods as a result.  I know there is nothing medically wrong, but it does not help me when he is constantly sick! Strangely enough he seems to have no problem with cookies.. except when he tries to put them in his mouth whole!

We have another Drs apt this week to check his weight etc so hopefully we will be able to get some help/advice from them!

Re: A backward step...
hi hun, it sounds like he has food anxiety there is a show called little angels on austar and there was a kid on there that had it once he could only eat pureed foods and th thought of new foods terrified him he also ate choc buttons. it was an actual severe anxiety and he couldnt even touch certain foods becasue he was scared of them so maybe you should look into it? id hate for you to be going through all of this when he might need treatment for it. ps. the kid on the show learnt to eat slowly with the help of a behavioural therapist. good luck

Nope I think even at the age of 1 he sounds like this little boy! He has no problem with cookies!! I let him taste chocolate once and had no problem with this either.. strange huh  It is definately behavioural, I am seeing a pediatrician today so hopefully we will get some help with it!

I hope he stops it soon.  It must be so frustrating for you.  Just wait until he starts sticking his fingers down his throat because he likes the sound of his gagging!  Yuck!

Re: A backward step...
It must be very frustrating, and difficult for you Lorna... It seems that no matter what else they refuse - cookies are fine.  Jaydee is generally a great eater - my little gobble guts.  Sometimes when he is being difficult (usually because he is sick), I make him a little snack plate.  I put a mix of his favourite (which can change without notice) fruits, some pieces of cheese, and some crackers.  I leave it on his special table for him to pick at - even though it isn't ideal, at least I know he is getting healthy food, and he is eating it of his own volition.

He is also obsessed with noodles and rice, so I make him these for dinners and lunches and mix in veges and meat (he won't eat veges any other way at the moment).

I think James is well aware that the gagging is upsetting to you, however it is probably a habit now, and he may not always be doing it on purpose, but he can probably control it better if he really wants to.  Try maybe giving him half a cookie for eating something good and healthy without gagging.

Good luck - Lui.

Re: A backward step...

Thanks Lui

He is great at the pureed fruit and veg.. just not when it is whole. I had kinda got used to him being sick again, it is just hubby has been home for a couple of days and had no idea how regular it was! JB is getting so much better at self-feeding, but after one or two pieces he refuses to eat!!! I have tried leaving things around for him too but he plays with it.. so I have food to explore and food to eat.. that doesn't work!

I am so used to it now that I have no reaction to it lol I think it is his way of saying he is not happy with the foods.. he knows I tend to give him a puree after he doesn't eat his meal otherwise he has nothing in his tummy. I reward him with a yogurt when he does eat his lunch, if he doesn't finish lunch he has to wait until dinner for it.

I have tried so many foods with him and he just does not like a lot of things. He dislikes eggs, cheese, cucumber, any veg unless it is pureed, rice, chicken sticks, fish sticks (at the moment!) apples, oranges,

The solids he will eat are banana, pineapple, advacado, bread (not toast and it has to be without butter), ice cream, cookies,  sweet potato puffs, pasta at a push!

I struggle so much with wanting him to eat healthily and just wanting him to eat! lol I have fed him chicken nuggets etc which I hate doing, but if he will eat them then great! I haven't tried noodles, but I will give that a go to see if he will eat them!

Thanks for your advice Lui! I really appreciate it!
