I am a married mother of 3 children (13, 12 & 8) and I am also a full-time caregiver for two 2 yr olds. My babysitting career started when I was 7, for my sister (who has spina Bifida). I took the babysitter's course when I was 10, and have been busy caring for little ones ever since. My oldest two children, Patrick & Shevy, are 9 months, 2 weeks, 6 days, 6 hours and 18 minutes apart. (That whole 'breastfeeding as a form of birth control' does NOT work).
I have ALOT of first-hand experience with learning, physical and emotional disablities with their respect to children.
The most important advice that I can give to anyone is, aside from patience, you must understand that children are sponges. Meaning that whatever they hear or see, they will learn. I teach the children that I care for, sign language, as another way of communicating, especially when they are too little to speak yet.
A child that is shown love and respect, will give it in return. |
