Walking out of the shopping centre last night after doing some Xmas shopping my hubby and I were astounded by the blanket of smoke covering the area. The fires are happening over a hundred kilometres away in the mountains but they have been burning for weeks now. There doesn't seem to the light at the end of the tunnel for along time yet. We just can't believe how bad hte smoke is. Even during Ash Wednesday many years ago when I could see the smoke from my house where the actual fire was there was no smoke in our area.
The smoke is that bad on some days that we can't hang out our washing outside because they will just end up smelling like smoke. It looks like the fires are only around the corner not miles and miles away.
I had a work colleague complaining the other day about it and not being able to hang out her clothes. I had to remind her that if it is this bad here imagine what the poor families where the actual fires are going through so stop complaining about a bit of smoke, at least she has a home at the moment.
It's times like these that you realise how lucky you are and not take anything for granted.
I wish all the people who are in the thick of the fires the best of luck and my thoughts are with you. Please be safe. |
