I am so old!!!

Comment Published at 17:0217:0214 comments14 comments46 Visits46 VisitsReport

I had my trial at Hogs Breath last night. OMG i am surrounded by infants!!! The average age of the waitresses there... 17! I shit you not! I was talking to one of them, she was 15. I was so shocked! I was listening to their convos all about how they want someone to buy alcohol for them, drive them around, help them get into pubs!! All i could think... OMG I am SOOOOO OLD!!! I dont know where all the people are that have kids that she was telling me about?? Must be the ones on day shifts. Well i hope so anyway...

I realised while i was there that there may be more to this place than i thought originally. I asked why there were so many new people. I met 4 people that had only started within the past month. The guy i was working with said, they just cant keep staff. I was like ok... I will tell you why i think they cant keep them... Because i found out that they are only paying $14.50 an hour (and that is for my age, so image what the 15 year old is on)!!! OMG i have never been paid this low ever.. not even when i was 16... Anyway, it is because they are paying under the cafe award, not hotels. Even thou i am in the bar.. I think that is wrong, but anyway, i am only there for like 16 hours a week. So im not too worried. It will still be more than what i get from centrelink.

I was sort of expecting it to be busy there, but it wasnt. It was dead in fact. I was quite bored really. I really hope it is busier tonight, because i think i will go insane if it is that quiet all the time! They did say it was a rather slow night there last night.

Anyway, im going to go now. Austin is asleep and i want to have a shower and stuff before he wakes up!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!! xxx

Re: I am so old!!!

lmao, i use to be like those 17yr old girls.. I never asked for people to get me into pubs, but i was always drinking and getting driven around lol, i do miss those days sometimes but my life is so mych more exciting now anyway.

I do agree with you tho, that any job pays beter then centrelink. Im entitled to a whole $60 a week lol, i desperatly want a job in a few months but afternoon shift. Well i hope tonight is more busy for you. I use to work in a restuarnt and some nights we would have 20 customers then some nights 70 lol, i liked it the most cos i was on training for 6months i was only 16 but got to work behind the bar and make drinks ect..

Enjoy your weekend too Cass

Re: I am so old!!!

Oh how I miss Australian wages... :)

I was working at Safeway in the meat department, and if still living in Australia now, could have owned my own house, and be set up real nice.. Here I was working in a kitchen, in charge doing the same amount of hours, and was lucky to be able to help hubby buy him not having to pay for the food... The wages here are amazing.. Minimum I believe has only just hit 8 dollars, and Waiters get way less because they get tips.. Which they are also taxed on...
Still when you are on your feet all the time you do want more then that don't you...

My mother was making a mint cleaning hotel rooms...  Ahhh how i would love to go back to work.. But not just yet.. :) No one wants to hire a pregnant lady.. :)

I hope it picks up for you the next time your working, nothing worse then starting out a new job bored...

Good luck on getting the job though..

Re: I am so old!!!

Ahhhh welcome to the world I work in!!! The average age of the weekend staff is 15 and me well nearly 15 years older than the all of them!!!! It takes a bit of getting used to but most of the time I find them coming to ask my advice on boys, drinking, sex etc.... there are days where I feel like a surrogate Mum lol!!

As for your wages.... hmmmmm.... they've got it all sussed!! I know here in Qld for us it's cheaper and easier to keep them as causuals rather than part time. Part time entitles them to holiday pay, sick pay and holidays. Casual works better for us as we can cancel shifts an hour before hand whereas for part time we have to give them a minimum amount of notice. There are a lot of employers that will work the system in favour for them... it's all about saving money and sometimes the quickest and easiset way is to cut the wages. I have to say that $14.50 is a bit low.... considering mine is $17.65 an hour and double that on public holidays!!!! hmmmm, makes me wonder!!!

Slow nights suck!!! The bordeom can be so hard to handle.... believe me, at the moment we are the quite that we actually got the toothbrush out and scrubbed the grout between the tiles the other day *yawn*!!!!

All the best and I hope tonight's that little busier for ya,

fi xoxo

Re: I am so old!!!

At least you have a better pay then centrelink as you say and that means you can get some experience and look around for better in the mean time. I guess that is what everyone else is doing. If you stay on longer and they are happy with you they could increase your pay to above award anyhow so hope so. I don't think they could get away with paying under the award. Hope you enjoy this job anyhow. It makes a difference. The young ones around could keep you feeling young! Hope so. Have a great weekend, Lynette xx

Re: I am so old!!!

Dear Cass, I suppose it was better to be quiet for your first night....like dipping your toes into water for the first time....maybe be busy tonight. I think all cafes are finding it tough these days, not many people can afford to go out anymore.

Sure is an eye opener listening to the young ones talk, but gee your only young also actually only a baby compared to me...haha!

Love Janice xxxxxx

Re: I am so old!!!

LOL Working with teens is going to take a bit of getting used too! Is the hourly rate for permanent or casual? I know you want to work but don't let them rip you off.

Hope it all works out ok,

Cath xxoo

Re: I am so old!!!

Oh i know. The 15 year old had me exhausted just listening to her PMSL!!

I just checked and $14.50 is for part time employment. I dont really know all that much about part time, as i have only ever been full time in hospitality. It is closer to $19 for casual. Which obviously i would prefer!

Re: I am so old!!!

Oh wow, my minimum wage in this industry was like $17 an hour and that was in a cafe. I earnt more while I did my traineeship. I would research the minimum wage for your state and double check that is right. Unfortunatelyy the standard of service in these places has dropped significantly over the past few years with the employment of younger and younger people (so as to have to pay less) with very little to no experience or training.

I hope it works out for you as it can be a very fun and enjoyable industry when under the right conditions. Congrats again too. xx.

Re: I am so old!!!

OMG you are so right!! I just checked on the NSW Industrial Relations website and the award wage for waiter and bar staff (grade 2) is $17.32 per hour + $1.45 holiday pay.

I think i will see what my first pay slip says and if they arent paying me right i will talk to them about it.

I thought it sounded very low. As i said, i was paid better when i was 16.

Thanks Karen!!!

Re: I am so old!!!

Haaa, haaa no you're not you are sooo young!!!  Just different interests than the silly years!  Really??? That is interesting, my daughter was paid 7.75 an hour  when 21 to waitress, had to provide her own float or change and had to give all tips to be shared with all that worked there. After buying her shoes and uniform it was such a negitive venture.  I bet you will do so well, good to know you get a decent wage. Best of luck!

Re: I am so old!!!

I am soooo no young! LOL.. but this debate could go on forever!! LOL

OMG i have never heard of having to provide your own float! I have worked in places where you shared tips, but that was in a very busy bar, where you would sometimes get $500 in tips to share between 4 people.

I hope it works out for me. I just checked out the Industrial Relaations website and the award wage is nearly $19 for casual. But i just checked and if i am employed as part time, then it is only $14.50. I dont really know the difference, will have to talk to them tonight.

Re: I am so old!!!

The diff between pt and casual is for a casual you get no benefits such as sick or annual leave but a higher hourly rate and they do not have to roster you on for any particular hours unless agreed in a contract, p/t you get sick and annual leave plus you have a minimum hours to be rostered on. and a  lower hourly rate.
