James and Jacquelyn just wouldn't wait any longer. All Saturday and Sunday I had contractions on and off. Nothing I couldn't handle but they were getting stronger by Sunday night. They'd start for a few hours and then stop for a few hours more. I was chatting the whole time, saying when I had them. No worries I kept joking just big brackston hicks. But I did warn Shane and Sami that things were close.
Monday I woke at lunch time. They were definitely stronger, a lot stronger. Not with any consistency, so I just ignored them for a while. Stopped again for a few hours as well. Then, just as i was still chatting online hehe they came back with a vengeance. I said I might ring the hospital just in case knowing that the twins were transverse and I couldn't deliver them naturally. Yes, they suggested i come in straight away.
When I got to the hospital after a leisurely one hour drive, I was 3 cm dilated. No need to panic they said but i had to have a cesarean within the hour. Within the hour! Now i started to worry.
But i needn't have as things went very smoothly, even joking with the nurses in the theater. Although it did seem very surreal. This was my greatest fear for this pregnancy, yet here i was almost looking forward to it as the labour pains started to bite.
Not fair to have labour pains AND a c- section!!!!
Jacquelyn and James were born on the 14th April at 7:28 and 7:30 at 34 weeks and 5 days. Unfortunately i didn't get to hold them straight away as they were off to the neonatal intensive care unit (nicu). I was in recovery for a few hours until i could get to see them. Yes thats the attractive photo that Shane uploaded. Kill him for that later.
the twins spent 7 days in the unit. the first 3 in a humidicrib. It was very hard to see them so small and fragile. I practically willed them to get better. I was told it could be a few weeks before they could go home at first. Everyday was different news, depending on how they went in the night. Well, they proved little fighters!! They soon learned how to suck and wonderfully put on weight. I was very lucky.
Once they were out of the unit, they wanted to see if i could cope with two premmies that needed 3 hourly feeds. I haven't slept much since lol. The feeding does seem almost constant sometimes. Feeding them fast seems to be the only way hehe
Finally we were given the all clear to come home. YAY. and a decent cuppa as well lol.
The feeding continues around the clock. Premmie babies must be kept warm at all times and if they dont put on enough weight they might have to go back to the unit. I'm to ring 24/7 if I need to.
Keiraleah has decided she loves them and has already given them a kiss. Sami has given one a bottle and is chief nappy helper.
Yes I'm busy but loving it!!!!!
A special thank you to dannii17 for the bulletin announcement
This was the first pic we took at home. Jacquelyn on the left, James on the right.
