Obama's speech to America's students

Comment Published at 10:4010:4011 comments11 comments41 Visits41 VisitsReport

Yesterday, US President addressed students young and old in order to motivate them in the importance of education. This speech created a lot of hoopla before it was meant to air yesterday.  A lot of schools opted out and chose not to play it in their classrooms. The administration responded by posting the speech on the internet before yesterday's airing so that parents and teachers alike could make a decision on whether or not to play it.

It created a lot of discussion and a lot of political back and forth. If you are a parent who believe in the importance of education, I don't know what about this speech you'll find disagreeable. Surely, we put other, less admirable people as role models: actors/actresses, athletes.

I, as a parent, would more than gladly make my children listen to anyone who would give such encouraging speech.

Anyway, if you are curious... here it is.

Re: Obama's speech to America's students

I thought that was a great speech and I think all high school students would benefit from that speech, if they bothered to listen, so it's a shame to hear that schools opted out of airing it in there classrooms. So true. Everybody needs to take responsibility for education, teachers, government, parents and the student. And some inspiring stories of average Americans who had obsticles in there way but still kept trying, like the guy with the brain tumour. I would have no problem with my kids hearing it. They could come away with something, even if to just make them think. Where is Ruddys speech, Aussies. I hear more about Obama I think.

Re: Obama's speech to America's students

You know to me this is a thing that all Presidents (what ever their race may be) should give. I know a lot of the Rebublicans were saying this was a way for Obama to brainwash us kids. HOW?!?! Ok if telling us we need to get a good education, and we should strive to make our selves better people is "brainwashing" then sign me up. I will gladely do that in a heart beat. But for people to say this because he is African-American is ubserd! Both Regan and G.W.Bush gave this speech and NO ONE said anything about it, they applauded them. Why do you ask? BECAUSE THEY WERE WHITE! People are so hung up on their predjuices that they couldnt give a rat butt about what is actually good for the country. I for one am ashamed that these are the people leading my country, people who cannot accept all races as equals, and they have to bash others to gain there social status. KUDOS for Obama! CHANGE IS IN PROGRESS!!

Re: Obama's speech to America's students

Well said!!! Ppl should be more concerned about creditentials then the colour or the age of the person giving the advice or encouraging ppl. Who are you going to listen to? someone who has the experience to back up what they are saying or someone who is just saying to get more votes???? (Which is what happens here in Oz! They say what we all want to happen and then turn around when the get into power and screw us over!!!!!) Pollies who needs them!!! Actucally we do need them just not their lies!!! and their inability to do anything!!!

Great point, we need to encourage our children to strive to be all they can be. I'm always on my kids to take more pride in their work and learn all they can!

Jaxon loved the president! What a great speech! Education is everything, without it we have nothing!

Inspiring!

I dont see either why anyone would choose to opt out of it. Anything which motivates kids is surely to be grasped with both hands!!!

Re: Obama's speech to America's students

Thanks Izzy

That was really interesting, personally I would have thought it very motivating!!!

Love the way he doesn't hide his simple background, makes him seem more approachable, loved the way he sums up failing as being just a way of trying again!!!!

Pretty excellent speech in my opinion

I read a quote once by Thomas Edison (incase you have no clue who he is invented the light bulb) "I have not failed, but found 10,000 ways that WON'T work." Just thought I would share.

I agree. I have been out of school for a while, but I was pretty inspired nonetheless!

Re: Obama's speech to America's students

Exactly. I work in a school and have a child that refers to himself as a failure.

For them to hear the President of the USA talk about his education and how strong he has become, would be fantastic for every child to feel more motivated to push harder

Thought it was absolutely great
