When is a spammer NOT a spammer?

Comment Published at 18:0218:0213 comments13 comments87 Visits87 VisitsReport

Hello folks,

I have noticed an increase of member reports lately for the reasons of spamming. In resolving this matter, I try to look for evidence. So I would like to remind everyone what spamming isn't.

Advertisement on Minti by way of a member's profile is allowed. We do not want to turn any business oriented people away. As we are all aware of, there are Minti parents who are trying to make ends meet by starting their own business. Advertisement is also allowed within one's own blog or appropriate group blog.

If you see someone abusing their blog and bombarding the activity list with blog posts full of advertising, then they are truly spamming our site. Though I rarely see this happen, you are more than welcome to report members caught doing this.

The only place we want to scrutinize is the advice section. Advice articles containing a parenting related advice and only containing minimum advertisement (about 2 lines) is allowed. Should you see articles with an excessive amount of advertisement, please feel free to report it.

For the reasons I have stated above, I will be resolving to keep some of the members that have been reported.

Regards,
Izzy

Re: When is a spammer NOT a spammer?

I understand what you are saying Izzy and I totally agree with you

At the same time, its very annoying to the regular members of Minti, who join up to be part of a Parenting community, then see new members join, plant a blog promoting something or other, usually not even parenting related then disappear never to be seen again, I have no issue with those that join the site, participate in all things and at the same time blog promoting something they feel strongly about

BUT why should we still have the comments and blogs they make on the site remain if the membersss themselves don't??

Those that make one blog then disappear??????????? Then so should their spam

Maybe if you could make a button for us to press insted of report that could be used so you can watch people to see if they are just here to advertise or are actually wanting to be part of minti. Make it so once they are "reported" give them a week or so to see if they actually do anything else or even log on again, then email them to see if they actually want to stay part of minti.

Apart from being anoying im sure its taking up bandwith (as I said before) And slowing down minti.

Re: When is a spammer NOT a spammer?

I my opinion, a spammer is a person or computer program that creates an account for the sole purpose of advertising.

Just like what Zoolooau just mentioned....

There are a lot of accounts being created on a daily basis that only have one blog entry with these links off site. We will only ever see these accounts updating their blog and not contributing to the helpful content of the forum. In my eye, if a member does not ask questions in an attempt to gain advice,  does not answer questions of help with legitimate and sound advice, or contribute to the growing advice pages within a few months of joining up....well their accounts should be either frozen or removed and the owners of these accounts emailed to explain that they failed to meet the blog/forum requirements of genuine participation, and advised to recreate their account if they are going to be serious and participate....rather than advertise and not  contribute.

I really dislike spammers, and will report every single one as often as I find them popping up.....

Re: When is a spammer NOT a spammer?

which comes back to what i wrote a while back(i cant find where i wrote it) but i had suggested that maybe it should be necessary or someone when they join to write something about themselves.

i also cant see whats the point of having the message up there that  such and such has no friends be there friend. how can you reach out and do this when they havent written anything about themselves. only to discover down the track that they are only purely here to spam

I agree with you Annie, I try to welcome new members but ii is not always possible, and many new members become on your friends list and rarely return

Re: When is a spammer NOT a spammer?

There has been 4 "people" who have joined in the past few hours who have just added a blog and a link to another page, is there any way to get rid of them, they are just taking up space hehe

Re: When is a spammer NOT a spammer?

Izzy isn't this making the site go slow with all these people joining tojust add there web page

My understanding this is a parenting site not a site to advertise diy or such like as the last couple of adds have done Yes advertise if it has anything to do with raising a child or asking advise but this is not happening

Re: When is a spammer NOT a spammer?

I must say I have reported a couple of the people that join just to put on advertisement.

Apart from being anoying arnt they taking up bandwith on your site?

I will ignore them if you want me to, but the people who just join to put a link to another page, seems like spam to me.

I dont mind if people are actualy active on the site and add stuff about other webpages or there business but the people who just join to link to scam sites i think should be just deleated.

Re: When is a spammer NOT a spammer?

Hi zoolooau,

Do not worry about having reported in this past. :)

Minti actually has a system in place to fight spam, so a great majority is caught even before they start.

You are right, in that if you see members repeatedly posting spam/links to other site, and responding to posts by posting links that has nothing to do with the post they are responding to - these are definitely spam  and should be reported.

What I am cautioning the community is reporting new members the instant they post about a business advertisement (usually in their profile and/or blog). At this point, we really have no idea if they are going to post advertisement once or whether they will keep posting spam links all over the site. Just don't jump the gun, sort of speak.

Thanks!

Re: When is a spammer NOT a spammer?

actually there are people stationed in antartica . australia has a base there. why i know i used to work for the weather bureau and we had staff go there on a long term basis.

it gets dark there early, besides when they are off duty there isny much to do so being on line makes sense. Also americans have a base there and a few other nationalities.

Re: When is a spammer NOT a spammer?

Hehe, yeah I relise there are people there but they had just linked to one of thoes scam sites so they probly just randomly chose a place to live.

Sorry im just sick of people trying to scam other people. They have even started to advertise on t.v!!!! I just hate seeing people on the news that have been scamed. And i would rather not hear about people on here being scamed by other members :(
