I have a 3 1/2 yr old GPS

Comment Published at 18:5718:577 comments7 comments53 Visits53 VisitsReport

My son is now actually 3 years and 8 months old. Since before he turned 3, I noticed that he's great at directions. He's been going to the same preschool since he was 2, so understandably, he'll know how to go to school and how to go home. But he's been doing this since about slightly after 2 1/2 years old. He would tell me where to turn and if I turn the opposite direction (to go somewhere else for errands, gas, etc), he gets upset.

Then in November of last year, we went to a mall we don't normally go to. We had a Christmas portrait done as a family. When we got there, we saw Santa. Two days later, when I took him with me to pick up the pictures he grabbed my hand and said, "I want to go there to see Santa!". Here I am thinking, wow! I've been to this mall several times and I still get turned around!

A few weeks ago, we went to Target. Again, this is not a place we usually go to...and the silly woman that I am, I couldn't find the front of the store in order to check out! I asked my son if he could help me,  and he did. When he saw the cashiers, he said, "Mommy, you found it all by yourself. Great job, mom!"  lol

Perhaps this doesn't speak to my son's spatial ability, but instead of my lack of it. lol

Man, I need one of those. No matter which way I turn out of the parking lot, it will be the wrong way!

LOL Sounds like he might come in handy for lots of trips. Now can he pass some of that on to my partner? He is totally the opposite and it can get very frustrating when he drives LOL

When my sister was 3 she once directed my grandparents to Bunnings (hardware store). When they asked her how she knew where it was she looked at them and said "Because that is where mummy gets her makeup from"....OMG

Re: I have a 3 1/2 yr old GPS

Aren't kids great at helping us out sometimes and what memories they can have!  We call our oldest Aylaphant because she can remember things from when she was 1, and she is now almost 6!!!  Our almost 5 year old is the same too, so I guess we have to be very careful what we say and do around them, incase it bites us on the bum later on.

At least you won't get lost on a road trip.  You can just get your little man to tell you which way back you have to go.

I know how you feel, my youngest turned 2 in October and we can be going somewhere and he'll tell me "wrong way mummy", especially when he knows we are going somewhere he doesn't want to go. Its amazing how quickly they learn about their surroundings!
