Sharing My Beach with BUSTER !!!!!!

Yeah I'm sharing my beach with "BUSTER".   Nice to know that I am sharing  the beach with a piece of history.

Back in the 1880"s Woolgoolga was a busy sea port for the whole of the mid north coast of New South Wales....Shipping out timber to other settlements and shipping in goods that the settlements needed up the coast.

"BUSTER" was a 130-ft, 300 ton, 3 masted sailing ship....She was built in Nova Scotia in 1884....While waiting to load timber bound for New Zealand, she broke her moorings in a storm and came to rest on our beach.

You only ever see 3 pieces of wood sticking up as the rest of her is covered by sand....With all the storms and bad weather we have had this year in May she was completely uncovered, for everyone to see. They say it has been 15 years since she was last uncovered...this has been great for locals and visitors alike to share in a piece of history...for me it has been a privilege to share my beach with "BUSTER".

There is a sad side to this ! Some mindless twits ( sorry) can not just appreciate a part of history but think they have the right to take pieces of Buster....what pleasure they get out of  that is beyond me.

http://www.thefreelibrary.com/PLEA+TO+LEAVE+BUSTER+ALONE%3B+Shipwreck+not+for+souvenirs.-a0200760387

We have a plant that still fascinates me everytime it comes into bloom....."A Wild Hibiscus" why does it fascinate me....when  the bud comes out and till it is half open, the colour is pink....then magically as the petal opens it turns white....PRESTO!

Much Love

What a privelege (sic) to share your beach with such an incredible piece of history. Watching people walking among the wreckage almost sacreligeous. Down our way, we had the Pasha Bulker in 2007, which attracted huge crowds, including Jodii and I We got to see it from close proximity. It was just amazing - a huge coal loader on the beach, without much water around it, and in 1974, we had the Sigma go aground across the harbour, but nothing anywhere near as historical, and beautiful as the Buster.

Re: Sharing My Beach with BUSTER !!!!!!

Hi  actually we do have another wreck on the other side of Newcastle Harbour,

on Stockton breakbreawater lies a shipwreck call the Adolf

the wreck was there even before the breakwater was built

i visited this wreck some years ago while walking along the break water

the last time i was anywhere near it people used to fish off it but was getting badly delapitated

there probably not much left of it today

and i certainly doubt it safe to walk on but still part of stocktons history just the same

by the way howdy grannyjack and jodi_lee from guess who  : )

Re: Sharing My Beach with BUSTER !!!!!!

I remember the  Adolf, had a Uncle who lived at Stockton and have walked along the breakwater.

I understand most people are curious, me included but any items that make up our history should be given the respect and left alone.

Thanks for dropping in and taking the time to read my blog.

 Hi Jacqui,

It is always lovely  to see you pop in, yes it is a real shame people feel they have to  walk among the wreckage and not realising they are doing so much damage.

We did see the Pasha Bulker on the news, gee 2007, that long already, where does time fly? Glad to hear that you & Jodi had a close up experience with her, must have looked  enormous.

When they show the front of the ships you can really see the shape of it I love things of the past they should leave it be for other to see!!!!!!!!!!!

I also didnt know that with the Hibiscus did that i will have a look on the net which one mine is out the back When my daughter J had her six bday in jan the hibiscus was blooming and another hot pink flower was blooming so i made a vine and brought hot pink fake flowers and wound then round the verander poles it looked very pretty some people thought they were real.

Yes mand people should leave Buster alone for other generations to be able to enjoy.

I like the  way  you  think, putting up fake pink flowers wrapped in the vine, must have looked great for people to think they were real.

The Hibiscus is amazing - I didnt realise they did this - is it just the wild ones?

Buster is pretty amazing too! How long before he gets covered up again? I dont suppose he can afford to be uncovered for long before the elements do worse than the looters?

Thanks for sharing!

Re: Sharing My Beach with BUSTER !!!!!!

I had never seen a Hibiscus like this one till we moved here, we have other Hibiscus but they are only one colour so we think it is only the Wild one that does this,  still fascinates we every year it comes into flower.

Buster  is slowly being covered again but not as quick as we would like for the two reasons you name, the elements and the looters.

Re: Sharing My Beach with BUSTER !!!!!!

Yes dear Annie,  Buster is only about another 50 yards up the beach from where we turned around to come back to our men folk.

Magic feet hey Annie, thankyou....yes it is the first time we have seen Buster  whole and most likely will never do again, once he is covered up again.....it has been so exciting. When I do my walks I walk right down to Buster then turn around and cone back.

Love Janice

Wow what an awesome piece of history... Taken by storms, then returned by storms.  I hope the souveneir hunters have given it up and realised how selfish they are.  That hibiscus really is amazing, what a lovely blog JJ! xox

Re: Sharing My Beach with BUSTER !!!!!!

It is certainly an awesome piece of history, it has been a pleasure to see Buster uncovered in my lifetime.  Just to think this grand ship travelled thousands of sea miles to get here and help many a settlement from Australia to New Zealand, supplying timber it is amazing. Buster helped in making history for many places and now a part of history.

Much Love JJ xxxxx

You have a Hawaiian garden also Vicki, with some lovely colours...we have a crimson and yellow one, but this wild Hibiscus still fascinates me every year...one day pink then white the next.

You have been in my thoughts often, hope you hanging in there.

Re: Sharing My Beach with BUSTER !!!!!!

What a great blog!   Nice to know you have a piece of Canada so close to you and that you walk there, near to it,  often!  Can you imagine building that beauty way back then?   All the timber drawn out of the massive woods near Nova Scotia and pulled by horse teams to where it would have been hand hewn!!!   And all the pegs and fittings cut by hand!  Just imagine her launch with all those that built her looking on!   I just can't help but marvel at building something that massive that could cross oceans and end up to rest on your beach.

I love your plant!  Do you know it was a hibiscus that we have here, the two big trees I move in and out each year?  The one was the plant I took into my son when he was hospitalized for so long!    I desided that I would carry in the bigest thing I could manage!  That young tree was going to make it and so was he!!   Do you know you are a big Sweety!  LOL!!!  Love Ya Mostest!

Re: Sharing My Beach with BUSTER !!!!!!

How about that Marg having a piece of Canada right here on our beach, where I walk. Yes my friend I can imagine  building that beauty way back then....When we first shifted up here, we got our hands on a book  all about the past history and how Woolgoolga  cam about, makes for very interesting reading. All of the ships that sailed into our harbour came from either Canada or England.

Before they built a pier the Bullocks team with the use of chains would pull the logs from the Timber Mills down to the beach...then they would float the logs out to the ships...then  men would load from the ocean  onto the ship. How far have we come, sometimes I feel  it isn't all good and we have become soft with all the modern fast racing technology.

A Hibiscus how about that also...the plant you bring in for part of the year, that you can't move around haha! A couple more special things that bind us together, my dear friend.

Love Ya Morest.

Found Avro, he is not happy has No Red Ball!!!!

Yes Avro sulking, where is his Red Ball??????

Especially taking pieces and just dropping them somewhere else where they have been found, they are destroying history how senseless.

Wheni read your title I imagined you were racing across the beach with a new little puppy Janice !!!!

I can't imagine why people want to take pieces of wood from the beach especially if they know it is a piece of history sadly some just use it as firewood once they get it home

Lots of love to you both
