A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

Comment Published at 23:1823:1847 comments47 comments85 Visits85 VisitsReport

A teensy scare this way on tuesday night. Steve was well and truly  in noddy land  at 10.30pm, when I was due to go outside and give the Possums and Wallabies their last feed for the night.

Walking out into our screen enclosed Patio, I headed for the door to go ouside, when something to the left of me sort of took my eye. In  darkness I could not quite make out what it was. I ignored it and continued outside to feed my animals. I turned around with one foot in the door, and by this time my eyes had adjusted to the darkness.  I looked down to find this black shadowy thing wriggling with half it's body in the air  and  only inches from my leg. I know this could have been a scene from a comedy movie but believe me it wasn't. You have never seen someone move so fast around the patio to the other side, through the other  door, once in the safety of the house and heart beating through my chest....all the lights were turned on and I gingerly glimpsed out the door to find a 2 to 3 foot Red Belly Black Snake wriggling towards our back door.

Brain working over time... me thinking I'm not going out there to face the snake....and secondly I don't want either of us to step out into the patio in the morning and be greeted by the snake. My only other option is to wake Steve up, not a good choice to wake Steve up.  So, I had a choice ! either wake up the snake catcher or face the snake again in the morning !  I woke up the snake catcher who crawled downstairs, observed disparagingly about the small size of the snake, used a broom to shoo it outside, and went back upstairs to bed and was asleep again within seconds ! Whats the problem ? its just a snake !

Becoz I have 2 young sisters and occassionly other foster kids we always have fake snake toys, one day dad was going on about them leaving their toys outside etc etc he went to pick it up and was only inches away BUT then it moved- yes it was a real one hehe i never seen my dad move soooooo quick either.

Re: A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

I'm with your Dad move as fast as you can, even though everyone tells you to keep still....when you come face to face with a snake, it is a different story. Did he get rid of the fake snakes???

Re: A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

Oh how exciting for you!  I love snakes, though have a healthy respect for them.  I have several rather hair raising stories about my encounters with them, though I think best kept to myself so as to not freak everyone else out! lol.

The best way to react around any snake is to stop still and back away very slowly.  Any hurried actions could result in a bite, especially if the snake is already feeling threatened.

At least you know that a vermin problem isn't going to arise on your property with your scaley friend about.

Re: A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

Arna that sort of excitement I can do without, have to be honest it has really unsettled me....just keep thinking another minute he would have been inside with me.

If DA doesn't want some house guests maybe I can send them your way. I  know you are meant to stand still but all what I knew flew out the window. I didn't threaten him just walked past him not sure what I walked past till I turned around....then I realised what it was and he didn't want to be friendly.

Oh poor you....I hate spiders snakes and anything crawly or creepy....I know they have a purpose but not on the back porch....!!! I am glad you had a big strong brave sleepy snake catcher there to protect and serve.....

I hope you have caught your breathe and I guess you will make sure now before going on to the porch to see if there is another visitor...

Re: A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

I'm with you any creepy crawly are not on my favourite list. Usually these type of things happen when Steve is not at home so I was thankful he was.

For sure the lights are turned on and I check before walking out to feed my animals,

Re: A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

You're going to hate this comment, but I love red-bellies! They're beautiful. I've got a rubber toy one wrapped around the metal frame on the head of my bed. LOL If I was to have a venomous pet snake, I'd love one of them. Their venom is nasty but they're actually fairly placid snakes. Had it been a common brown you'd have been bitten before you even saw it being that close. Red-bellies will usually only strike as an absolute last resort if rearing up didn't deter you from wanting to eat it - yes, believe it or not, that is what they are afraid of. They don't like the idea of becoming your dinner. LOL The general rule is to stand very still and they'll just forget you're there after a minute and go about doing their own little snakey business of catching and eating mice and other such little critters.

Re: A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

If memory serves me correct, I remember reading that you loved snakes.  I have enough trouble going to sleep but even having a toy one wrapped around my bed head would  freak me out. DA wouldn't you rather a pet cat or dog or even a lizard compared to a snake but if you want one, I'm sure we could find you one, this year  has been a bad year for snakes....we have had 2 6ft long Brown Snakes close to the house and as we have a Red Belly living near our dam, I'm sure she would like to relocated to your place...I know I'd like to see her go.

I am grateful it wasn't a Brown snake and believe you me I had no thought of having him for dinner.

Re: A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

I'd love to help you out by coming and getting your snakes, but no one is allowed to have a pet native animal that has been taken from the wild, least of all a venomous snake; and as I have a reptile keepers licence to lose and my neighbour is a National Parks and Wildlife ranger... best I didn't do that.

Re: A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

LOL, I'm sure the snake is long gone. Glad you didnt get bitten, given it was reared up in the strike position!

Red Belly Blacks are such creapy looking things. One of my boys got c hased by one in the creek when he was only 5. He was terrified. (Welll he thought it was chasing him, it was swimming downstream towards him.

But nowadays if I see a snake and tell them to stay away and be careful they would all be there in a flash!!!

Re: A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

Hope your right griz but we know we have a Mum Red Belly Snake which lives near our dam and knowing that they give birth to 12 to 20 baby snakes and the Kookaburras only get some of them, I know there  is  a lot more around. Usually don't worry about them if they are outside but this fellow was to close for comfort reared up and in the dark, he scared the life out of me.

As a child I had no fears, wish I was still like that.

Re: A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

I hate snakes. But an interesting thought. I was once asked which I hated worse, snakes or spiders, and I said I hate both equally, but it is not actually so, as I had to choose one to have a photo with, and even though my skin crawled away and ran out the door, I could hold the snake, where as I just couldn;t bear the hairy spider! I was shaking so much they couldn't get it on me!!! So there you go, I hate spiders worse!

Your fear of Spiders was greater than your fear of Snakes to have a photo taken with one. I know that I couldn't have my photo taken with either.

Re: A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

Don't tell anyone Teshia but underpants were needed if I had had some on.. That is what keeps running through my head he could have bitten me when I walked past him. He was about 3 foot long,  to long in my books. That is too many we have seen this year.

That was a big reminder to turn lights on when I go outside of a night time.

Re: A Teensy Scare!!!!!!!!!

A Teensy Scare, oh Janice I had to smile about a teeny scare as some folk in the UK scream blue murder at the sight of the tiniest spider which is harmless. Then say they would like to emigrate to Australia..........`how would they get on????

Very thankful you were ok though

I'm not sure how they would go emigrating to Australia, I'm certain we have more nasties then you do, over there.

Once I turned the light on and realised what it was the scream factor was gone and the thought of what am I going to do now, kicked in.

I am also thankful Pauline.

Just a snake! Just a snake! Uhm Arrrrrrrrrrgh :) Good move to wake sleeping man, sensible lady Janice. Snake needs to go live under rock not on patio,LOL.

Mind you not that I know, most we get round our way are Slow Worms www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildfacts/factfiles/281.shtml and they are cute, basking on the compost heap.

But real life venom sharing snakes, nah definitely should be encouraged to go explore elsewhere,LOL.

Glad you were safe and sound Janice, now thats two things that could have been sending those vibes. So glad to see you on line.

Exactly JUST a snake, I am still jumpy and keep thinking if I hadn't gone outside when I did, it would have  ended up in our lounge room watching TV with me. Yes snake should be well under a rock not in our patio.

Your Slow Worms look a lot friendlier than our snakes.

Am home safe and sound winnie and glad for that and  a good nights sleep last night.
