Remember s e x education classes??

Hi all

So who remembers having sex ed when they were at school? God, i do. I was in yr 6 and the instructor asked what the picture was. Me, thinking I knew all there was to know, put my hand up and was practically hyperventilating waiting to be picked. After an eternity, she picked me and I most proudly and very loudly said that the picture was overals. The whole room errupted in laughter as I stared around thinking, gee I must be pretty good to make everyone laugh.

Turned out that the picture was indeed a picture of OVARIES!! Ok, face turning redder by the second, couldn't slink any further down into my chair all the while wishing the world would swallow me and my stupid mouth up! Still cant live that one down..good ol' trusty mum is always there to remind me and anyone else who wants to hear the tale!

So, anyway, this term at school, my son has had his sex ed classes and according to him, they are a riot! He eagerly comes home to tell me everything he "learnt' and will usually break out into laugh with the odd, "mum, it was sooo gross". Hell, I thought I taught him all he needed to know..at least until he hears the rest from his mates lol.

I wonder how the teachers feel when faced with a bunch of pre-teens who think it is either funny or gross. How do they handle it? This leads me to wondering..do the kids really need to know all of the inns and outs..(pardon my funny lol) of sex at this age? What do you all rekon?

Enough from me know..got to batten down the hatches here is SA...big storm hitting...finally rain, glorious rain!

Re: Remember s e x education classes??

I took a course called human sexuality in college and even adults snicker and giggle when certain words were used. Adults! Because we were talking about sex and everything to do with human sexuality, we were using all sorts of words all throughout the course....and wouldn't you know it, the giggling and snickering lasted that long too.

Re: Remember s e x education classes??

i was fortunate as i had 3 older sisters. i remember that my mum was telling my older sister (3 yearsolder than me) about menstrual cycle and i was standing there (i was 10 ) my mum wanted me to go away but my other older sister who was 19 told my mum no she has to know all about it sooner or later and that i should listen in .

my 19 year old sister insisted because mum didnt tell her (as  lol said earlier it was taboo )  in the sixties when my 19 year old sister first got her menstrual cycle she was 12 she panicked.

i also think we had sex education in grade 6 but as i said i learnt a lot earler.

there are advantages having older brothers and sisters

cheers annie

Re: Remember s e x education classes??

Haha overalls hey. LOL

Nah, as for your question, I had Sex-Ed in year 7, i think...
And looking back, I think, "OMG We were so young" and that 12 year olds could not possibly know or think about this sorta stuff..

But the sad truth is, people are losing their virginity at an earlier age now..
My friend told me that even 8 years olds are doing it !
I was shocked !

So, I think that's the reason why they do the sex-ed so early..
It's not to encourage any of it, but in the HOPES that kids will understand what it is, and so the government and society can prevent things like that happening...

Though, I gotta admit, at 12 years of age, i NEVER thought of things like that..
wait, ok, maybe i did a few times when i was 11.. lol
but not anything like losing my virginity... i was still a child !!!

When it comes down to it, I hope that my children can trust that I can educate them on things like that..
Cuz at least i'll be telling them THE WAY i want and WHAT i want...
But if the teachers want to make their input, then that's fine with me..
So then I'll just complement their advice :)

It's hard to say whether I'd feel uncomfortable about my daughter being taught sex-ed at such a young age.. as she's only my first child and she's not even 1 yet (hehe she is in 2 weeks though :))
But I do see where schools are coming from...
They just want to make sure they can help to PREVENT young pregnancies before they occur :)

*End ramble*

LOL

Haha, I love your ramble!

I also think "oh my god, they are so young" but I guess in reality, they aren't..it's just us that are not ready for nature to happen...not that having sex at this age is acceptable but learning more about puberty and that should be taught.

Im sure all parents must go thru this at some point..

Thanks for ya ramble Thuy!!

Hiya Cazza!

I gotta say, the stuff Jors was relaying back to me was pretty indepth. I am impressed that they were so blunt and pulled no punches. so far he has not needed anything clarifyed but I have said that if he thinks of anything, just to let me know. I may just live to regret that hey! lol...no all good.

Good luck with brodie..hope your conversations are as animated and enthusiastic as mine have been !!

Re: Remember s e x education classes??

Hi matey,

I too remember Sex Ed classes . .  For us in Tassie we never got them until grade 8, by this time most of us already knew most of what was to be known and we all took great joy in harassing our teacher. Our poor vice principal taught this subject and he was extremely easily embarrassed . . Poor man really copped it from us horrible teens . . .

Thankfully sex Ed now starts in grade 5 here is Tas and the teachers are made of stone, which is a good thing as my eldest would have loved embarrassing them. Funnily enough my 'Miss Know It All" didn't know as much as she thought and spent a good amount of time with her head down . .

As for the rain .  YIPPE . .  WE are getting it too . . .

Cheers Kellz

YAY adelaides having rain...... finally!!  I remember the sex ed classes... especially when the teacher put a condom in the carrot. Alright, we were in yr 12 and probably shouldn't of laughed but it was hilarious!!!  I remember sex ed in year 6. I thought that there was no way in hell I'm ever having a period and no boobs for me either. The whole class was quite when the teacher was talking... we were all so grossed out hehehee!!!
