One thing does lead to another...

This basketball craze that has taken over Sam is even better than I thought! Not only has he now accepted the fact that he is of Chinese descent (like Yao Ming), he wants to know where all of the states in North America are located geographically so that he know where these teams are!

Let's see...

Detroit as in Detroit PISTONS

Miami as in MIAMI HEAT

Chicago as in Chicago BULLS

Phoenix as in Phoenix SUNS

LA as in the LAKERS

New York as in New York KNICKS

and of course, Houston as in HOUSTON Rockets!!

He said to us this morning, "Miami is a hot place". We were surprised that he knew. Apparently he had put 2 and 2 together - Miami Heat is called Miami Heat as a reference to the weather! Good thinking Sam!

I have to learn the names of the players and states of the NBA teams in a hurry too. Thankfully Pat is really into sports and Sam can have long discussions about team play with his dad.

We are buying Sam a map of the Americas and will hang this up on his wall so that he can work out the locations. If only he would take a similar interest in Australia...

Wow

Your son is a smart boy! And I'm pretty sure that at this age, he knows a lot more than some kids here in the U.S.  It's funny how people outside the U.S. seem to know more about American than people living here.

Wow
So true. The American influence is quite strong in many countries. I guess sports is a big thing in Oz, and if kids are into sports (like mine is), they do look to the top players in the States. Another big influence is food - Macdonalds for one!! (not sure if that is such a good influence tho

haha! Smart boy! If this craze continues, you might have to bring him to the US for a holiday and to watch a basketball game! Is he in Little League?

Yep. He has asked to go to the USA. He has to earn total credits of 5000 points. (credits mean that for every good thing that he does, he will get a star on our STAR CHART on the fridge). At the rate that he is going, he gets about 3 credits per day, which means that he will get to go to America in 1666.66 days!!

He is in a basketball team here. He had a game yesterday - sort of like an elimination round. His team was losing and his coach calls them the "titanic" as each member was sinking. The last member had to shoot a ball in so that the ship would float again and they could all get onto the next elimination round. And guess who was the last member who shot that goal in??! You should have seen the smile on his face when he related to the story to me this morning!!

That's over 4 years! Let's hope his arithmetic doesn't hit 4 digits yet. hehe
The Star chart is a good system. Is it working for both your kids? Should advice it here if it works.

The star chart works better on Sam than it does for Elo. She thinks she gets what she wants anyway so why work for it. This is of course, the fault of the adults around her! Sam does have to work harder... we are tougher on him that we are on her.
