Sleep Apnea

Hi.  I was diagnosed with sleep apnea almost 2 years ago.  The main cause of sleep apnea is the relaxation of the breathing passage during sleep.  This causes the breathing passage to close waking up the sleeper a little till it opens.  It typically prevents REM sleep and can cause severe tiredness and has been linked to heart disease.  http://www.sleepapnea.org/  has more information if you would like to read up.

There are a few different types of treatment.  1)  CPAP - constant positive airway pressure device to be worn during sleep 2) dental appliance and 3) surgery.  It does not sound like your son's is very serious.  Did he have a sleep study?  As a reference my first sleep study found I had 85 apnea's an hour and my oxygen intake dropped.  As a young boy I had my adenoids and tonsils removed which can help in apena cases.  It was NOT a big deal.  I ate ice cream in the hospital and only had really a scratchy throught that I can remember.  It was probably a little more involved but young kids bounce back very quickly.

I had a UPPP surgery last year and I am needing to have my jaw repositioned this year to hopefully fully correct my apnea problem.  I wish you luck.  I am sure everything will be fine.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write about this. I am being an overly paranoid parent I'm sure (I cried when the boy had his first needle)!!!  Regards, Jo

Is the op to remove his adenoids? My son had this done last year aged 5. Scary yes but well worth it now that he sleeps properly.

Sleep Apnea
I really dont have much of a clue, I am just petrified of the operation. Can you please tell me more? I know that it has to do with excessive snoring, restless sleep, attention deficit through the day. I watched him sleep the other night and indeed, he woke up about 3 times in an hour (not really fully waking, just jerking and then falling back into sleep). He rotates 360 degrees around the bed on a bad night. Do these sound like what your child did?  Thanks, Jo

I am so glad Minti friends are responding with more info. Our thoughts are with you. One thing I know, even with our hearts pounding is that children are resilient and strong. We freaked when Codi at 10 months needed to have surgery to both eyes. It was only a 15min procedure and a weeks worth of recovery...it does rock you to your core...but now we have such a strong bond with our toddler. Sam loves you and will recover with all your love.
