Cold Water Washing

Comment Published at 15:0015:003 comments3 comments14 Visits14 VisitsReport

I have been bothered for a while that Sophie WILL NOT wash her hands with even tepid water - it must be stone cold. I thought - how's that going to kill the germs? Silly me - I'd have to scald her skin to kill them, wouldn't I! But perhaps the soap works better with hot water? Well, I spotted a few short sentences in FILs newspaper on Wednesday which comforted me a bit:

"When it comes to tackling germs, it makes no difference if you wash your hands in hot or cold water, say U.S. Scientists. Hot water can cause soap to irritate the skin."

Yay, I can let her continue with what ever is comfortable, knowing it's just as safe, and maybe better for her skin.

I thought I ought to double check online to see if there are more details in the original. This is what I've found so far:

Re: Cold Water Washing

Having a step dad that is a scientist, I've picked up some useless facts along the way, one of which is about dishwashing liquid and the temperature of the water.  Apparently, if you use a proper anti bacterial dishwashing liquid, then you could be washing the dishes in an ice bath and the germs would still die.  If you don't use detergent, then hot water straight from the tap should be enough to kill most bacteria.  The theory of why people wash dishes in warm/hot water is simple: freezing cold hands mean more broken dishes.

That would then mean, it is the same with soap.

Yay, Sophie can wash away in cold water as much as she likes!

Read somewhere many years ago that hot water and soap don't go together well as it creates a breading ground for germs, not sure how true that is, though.

Love Janice

Interesting - maybe if it damages the skins protection then that's how it creates the breeding ground... Having seen how sensitive many people are to the chemicals in soaps, bubblebaths and shampoos, it makes you wonder what will still be deemed "safe" to use in 100 years from now. Rather like the lead make up of yesteryear, they may say "they used what on themseleves and their CHILDREN?!"
