Toddlers Property Law

Comment Published at 14:4914:4911 comments11 comments31 Visits31 VisitsReport

I was just looking at Izzy's video of Katie & Jojo and the only toy in the world, and I thought of this list. I heard this years ago, and like all the best jokes, it's funny because of the large element of truth in it. Today I found this on a BBC page, but I first heard it on a Care for the Family video.

1. If I like it, it's mine
2. If it's in my hand, it's mine
3. If I can take it from you, it's mine
4. If I had it a minute ago, it's mine
5. If it looks just like mine, it's mine
6. If I saw it first, it's mine
7. If you are playing with something and you put it down, it automatically becomes mine
8. If I'm doing something or building something, all the pieces are mine
9.If it is broken, it is yours (no, the pieces are still mine)

Re: Toddlers Property Law

On a good day my eldest son would give his younger brother some of his toys, then maybe the next day would be a falling out day and he would take them back. That's life !!!!!!!

Oh no, still? But come to think of it, me & my bro used to argue over which breakfast bowl we got to eat out of (the purple tupperware one was MINE and the blue tupperware one was HIS - see I can still remember, and I left home in 1988)! So I guess if you're lucky they grow out of it when they leave home. Or maybe not?

So so true!  We are having a lot of fights started because "she thinks that is hers and its not its mine!"  Do they grow out of it?

Re: Toddlers Property Law

Hmm, probably not, if Nell18-3 is still experiencing this with a 10 & a 14 year old! I am certainly still experiencing this, every time I get a "baby" toy out of storage "for Sophie" and Emma reclaims it. "But you're nearly 6!" falls on deaf ears! It's still hers, in her book.

You know, just last night I told Matty that the shirt Katie was wearing used to be his. You know what he said? "Mommy, I want to wear it now!"  tsk tsk.

I saw this one other time when Matty was still young. I love it since it's so true! It was so hard to take him out where there are other kids because everything was "mine!"  Now I get to have it at home for my own private enjoyment. lol
