FLOOD at our house . . .

Comment Published at 11:2411:2434 comments34 comments57 Visits57 VisitsReport

Hi guys,

Well yesterday afternoon my little suburb in Tas got his with a freak storm. Now this kind of thing doesn't happen very often down here so most people were hiding inside . . BUT NOT ME . . rofl . . Being originally from NSW I had seen these sort of storms before so I had Sumara and Danesha out with me cheering on the rain, thunder and lightening. Sumara just loved the flashes and clapped with glee while Danesha was overwhelmed by how much rain came down.

After the worst of the storm passed I finally found my camera to take a few shots which are posted below of my front yard. Sorry that some of them are overexposed but it was really bad light and I had to do this so you could see properly . .

Anyway - Around an hour later I got a message from Sam say "OMG mum are you alright?? How are tony and the girls?" . . Well I thought she was losing her mind as it was just an awesome thunderstorm . . So I txt'd her back and said yes we were fine, we not scared of thunder in this house . .  rofl . . .

Well the joke was on me as Sam ended up ringing to tell me a a few shops etc in my local suburbs main street had their roof's blown off and some even had flooding . .  OOOOPS, what is even more shocking is that I live less than 200 metres from the town centre . .  SO I guess we were lucky, as all we got was some flooding . .

Ironically we were the only ones in the street to get all this water in our yard . . Hubby and I are glad that we had not yet laid down all the pine bark etc as we would have lost the lot . .  I think all the new renovations that next door have been doing have sadly effected the run off to our property . .  Hopefully the problem can be fixed.

We always run out into a good down poor, ( mind with our water boiler on going problem we may even try showering in the next one :-)  stomp arourd and cheer. I love the rain and a good thunder storm.

The year Bosycastle in Cornwall happend we were 2 miles doen from there and yes it did rain hard, we were camping at the time, the next day we could not understand why every one was calling round to see if we were ok. it wasen't till we saw a tv , much later, we knew what had happend and realised we'de been very lucky. Some caravcans had been washed away up above and below us.

Wow, glad there was not any damage and you were all safe. Great pictures, that would have been exciting but I would have been hiding inside if there was lightning! Have a good weekend, Kellz, Lynette xx

Re: FLOOD at our house . . .

Hi Kellz

Wow love the photos, I'd be really stressed if that was my house, we've had quite a lot of rain here recently and I only had a small leak, nothing major, but I am quite lucky because we are on the top of a hill so most of the water goes down.  I love all the thunder and lighting stuff I find it really exciting, don't like the damage it causes though, lol.

That is what I call rain! Not that damp light drizzly stuff that comes down for hours and hours and even days and weeks. I'm used to desert weather, it's all or it's nothing. It's either bone dry or we are riding the waves down the street on ... the lids of styrofoam boxes or whatever other things we could find that would float. hehehe. I don't think I've ever seen a real surfboard here. LOL Summer storms are the best cause it's not too cold to go out and play in them.

Hi matey,

I think ALL of Australia is becoming the same, too much and too little when it comes to our weather. It's sad watching our country struggle to get water when so many of our cities simply let rainwater run away . . ..

Cheers Kellz

Re: FLOOD at our house . . .

I love a good thunder and lightning storm, especially the lightning I like pulling back rhe curtains and lying in bed watching it. But it is awful when the houses get flooded I wouldn't be so keen if that ever happened to me.

Hi there,

I am with you, I love laying in bed and watching the storms . . My dream home is one with a clear bedroom roof that can also be darkened if needed . .

Re: FLOOD at our house . . .

It's fun to get out in the rain when it's not freezing, isn't it? We did this just last week at our house too! Granted, heavy rain like that is common here, so I figure it's good the kids think it's fun. Once hurricane season starts it's raining all the time, so they need to be used to it!

Re: FLOOD at our house . . .

Hi matey,

Rain is great and as parents I think we sometimes can forget how much mun a child can get from playing in the rain . ..  As for the Hurricanes, I don't think that I could handle those but one never knows until they try ..

I love storms too, but only during the day. It's not much fun driving in it either. At least the kids liked it too.

Re: FLOOD at our house . . .

Hi Trace,

I love storms both day and night but I do agree about how it can effect driving. If people would learn to slow down and pull over if the rain is heavy then there would be much less accidents in the wet . .

Re: FLOOD at our house . . .

Hi Mate,

The property is fine but the gardens will need some major TLC. We are going to wait and see if it floods again before we decide on just what to do . . . Tell your daughter that an aussie mum says she is a scaredy cat and her 2 yr isn't even scared!! lol

I love a good storm, it clears the air. I love the smell when it has been hot and it rains, wet pavements and fresh ozone, lovely!

Hi matey,

I am so with you ! ! ! ! The smell of fresh rain on a hot surface is AMAZING, it is my favourite smell and I'm always the first in my house to run outside and take a huge smell . . .

Re: FLOOD at our house . . .

Hi honey,

Perhaps you should make a big game out the storms, use lollies and all sorts of treats to encourage him to laugh and enjoy mother nature . .

One of my girls used to think that the thunder was god farting!! I just did what I had to in order to help her through her fear, now she is fearless and often laughs at her friends . .

Re: FLOOD at our house . . .

Hi, last June we had torrential floods where we live.Six months rain fell in 2 days and it was terrrible. One person died because of an overflow drain that was blocked with a gate.He went down the drain to try and remove the gate that was preventing the rain drain away and got trapped.Fire rescue and paramedics tried to release him but were unable to do so and sadly he drowned.Peoples lives were devasated and many had to leave their homes and live in caravans on their front gardens or yards.A lot of people are still in the caravans now nearly a year on.My brothers house was flooded and everything downstairs had to be replaced-walls,electrics,floorboards etc.It has devestated many peoples lives here and continues to do so.Hope everything ok for you,Lisa xx

Re: FLOOD at our house . . .

Hi honey,

Floods can be so very devastating especially when it takes a human life . .   People and families were lucky in my area, the only loss was to the businesses that were affected BUT even that loss will be felt hard by those who own them.
