POLICE WARNING - TRUE

Comment Published at 21:1321:139 comments9 comments46 Visits46 VisitsReport
Hi guys - I thought I'd post this here in case some of you have missed the news recently, this is easy enough to do being a parent as we don't always have time to sit and rest . . . This is VERY important especially if you have younger ones using mobiles or even an elderly relative . .
Police wish to inform the public of a recent scam similar to the hitman email scam that is being sent in the form of a spam text message.

It appears people are receiving a text message stating that their life is in danger and the sender has been employed to kill them.

The text message states:
"Someone paid me to kill you. If you want me to spare you, I give you 2 days to pay 5000 dollars.  If you inform the police or anybody, you will die, I am monitoring you."

This message is followed by numerous other messages asking for funds to be transferred via Western Union to the name ASSANA MIZELE PATRICK.

A yahoo address with the user name khun19 is also mentioned.

“Members of the public are advised not to be alarmed if they receive these text messages to their mobile phone,” said Superintendent Brian Hay, Fraud and Corporate Crimes Group.

“In order to protect Australian consumers Western Union have advised that they have blocked the transfer of all funds to the name stated in the text message, however, the scammers may change the name,” he said.

Re: POLICE WARNING - TRUE

I heard about this and actually had a customer get one in front of me. Very scary for ppl who are young and niave or elderly and easily frightened. Arna has a point with numbers being easily traced but it also just as easy to change a number!

Re: POLICE WARNING - TRUE

only messages I get these days is direct from telstra! lol.  That is a pretty scary message to receive though, but at the same time, it is laughable.  Who is going to fall for something like that?  I suppose those who are younger and older would fall for it.

I'd like to point out that these people don't go searching for a specific person, they just pick a random number and send.  I'm sure the police will be able to track it down soon and solve it as a text is traceable.

If anyone does receive the message, that your phone into your local police station.  They will get a technician to remove it off your phone so that they can still have the required data.  In some cases, they may want to send your phone to a specialist due to not having one on site, but they have to return it to you within 14 days.  The more messages that are taken in, the more likelihood there is of them catching the people doing this.

Modern technology has gotten to a point where the text messages can be sent to multiple numbers at once via a computer.  These people have very good computer skills and know which programs are going to help them create a stir.

Re: POLICE WARNING - TRUE

Id just like to add that they also say "dont reply to the message" they think the person sending these is from overseas and they dont even know if the numbers they send these messages too is correct they are just guessing. So as long as you dont reply to them, they dont even know if the number they send these messages too is activated.
