Magical Week

Comment Published at 03:2603:269 comments9 comments28 Visits28 VisitsReport

Well, it has been busy, but there have been some magical moments, which I'd like to share.

When we woke up on Monday having been away all weekend, I wondered what the flash of red was outside, so I pulled back the curtain to discover our Japanese Maples had gone red over the weekend.  They are beautiful!  Witness photo number 1!

Last night, after dinner, Bella grabbed my hand and said "winkle".  Bemused, I let her lead me - all the way to the back door.  "Door", she ordered.  Once open, she led me through it and outside, past the car.  Then she looked up "star", she said "winkle".  Amazing!  She wanted to see the stars twinkle, so she led me outside to see them.  Gorgeous!

Then tonight we lit a bonfire - to burn off some rubbish.  Being Autumn now we can burn off!  So we snuggled outside in the cold, watching the fire (though the kids wouldn't stay still for long).

Then we cooked campfire food (though we did it in the oven - cheats!)  - damper, potatoes and sausages.  Royston made the damper himself and it tasted great (surprisingly)!

Looks wonderful! I love Maples! And I love the "winkle" story - so cute! I have to ask though, what is "damper"? It looks good & messy!

Re: Magical Week

Damper is a traditional Australian outback soda bread prepared by swagmen, drovers and other travellers. It consists of a wheat flour based bread, traditionally baked in the coals of a campfire. Damper is an iconic Australian dish.

Re: Magical Week

I remember it making it at school and it was always horrible!  All doughy and burnt on the outside, but what we had last night was great.  We took the recipe off the flour packet and it's basically flour, salt, baking powder, oil, milk/water - very simple, but R made it into a 'volcano' and mixed it slowly, then kneaded it to perfection (was that Dad or Jamie Oliver he learnt that from?).  It was all cooked through, crisp on the outside and tasted good - plus it only takes about 15mins on 220 - far better than our bread that takes 4 hours to make!
