HI - A bit about us - My husband and I were married in 1983, our son was born in 1986 - which makes him 21 this year - a real milestone and another era we are entering into. Hubby is a truck driver, he drives semi's and road trains, but only locally - thankfully he does not go away. I am a receptionist for a mining company, but I am also a trained counsellor. I plan to one day open my own practice, but I am getting some money behind me first - a security thing.
Our son is a handful, but we would not of had it any other way. He is an only child, he has just recently applied to join the Army and is just waiting to hear. He was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 16. I have heard all the pros and cons - believe me!!!! When he was younger we just accepted he was a very active, alert and bright child - although we wondered if he would ever learn obedience. At times I was so tired of chastizing and correcting him, it was just endless.
The reason he was diagnosed so late was because I wouldn't "go there". AD/HD was a new thing when he was young and I was not going to get on that bandwagon. He went to a private school where learning was done at the student's own pace - by the time he started high school he was 2 years ahead, but he was also hitting his level - one thing after another made his teenage years almost impossible for us and finally he dropped his bundle and totally refused to learn or settle in class. His grades also deterioated. Because there was such a drastic change in his attitude ... |
