Went in an ambulance today

Comment Published at 04:2604:2620 comments20 comments49 Visits49 VisitsReport

Today started quite ordinarily.  I had today off work to look after my two girls and my friend brought over her two kids, a girl and a boy, to play for the day (we do swaps of our kids in the holidays).  Most of the day went really well.  After lunch we went to the park just outside our back gate - all good.  Came back home. Went inside with BF for a minute and the kids were all outside playing on the deck.   Then I hear the girls calling for me and I go out - expecting to break up a fight.

Instead, I see my friend's little boy sitting on the deck, crying, with blood pouring down his face.  I called to BF and he comes out and gets some paper towels to stem the blood flow, then calls the ambulance.  Then we tried to get hold of my friend - she wasn't answering her work number or her mobile so I was asking BF to call the number of anyone I knew who worked nearby.  Finally got hold of her and said we'd meet her at the hospital.  The ambulance arrived and had a look and agreed it would be a trip to the hospital - there was a huge chunk out of his forehead (I swore I could see his skull) as well as some superficial grazes near the side of his eye.

I got in the ambulance and so did his sister.  I left my two girls at home with BF (I was so glad he had today off work!!).  When we got to the hospital, his mum was waiting for us - and I've got to admit I was glad to hand over the reins to her.  She asked her daughter to wait with me in the waiting room.  Her daughter was so reluctant to do so, but eventually agreed to come with me to call her dad as long as we went back to her brother after.  We did exactly that, but by the time we went back, he'd been moved elsewhere.  As we didn't know where, I took her back into the waiting room.   Poor little thing, she was getting so distressed at being away from her brother.  Eventually her dad arrived, but even that didn't help.  She just wanted to be with her brother.

Not long after, BF and my girls arrived and took me home.  Later tonight I heard from his mother.  He's chirpy and happy now - and when his sister got to see him, she was a lot better too.  He had a number of stitches - and in a zig zag shape so his dad dubbed him as having a "Harry Potter scar".  But no sign of concussion or other issues, though they'll be keeping an eye on him.  Apparently once he was stitched up, he wanted to come back to my place to play!  So at least he doesn't seem traumatised in that way.

My girls aren't quite as lucky.  My eldest has had trouble going to sleep tonight cause she said she keeps seeing him falling and all the blood when she closes her eyes.  I've had her listening to CDs so I'm hoping that will distract her enough to go to sleep.   My youngest hasn't said anything directly to me about it, but has been difficult to get her to stay in bed tonight.

As for me, I've been feeling pretty shaky to say the least.  I keep discovering blood on various articles (such as on the sleeve of my shirt) that I hadn't noticed before.  BF has been helping out tonight which I've been very grateful for.  I hope I sleep well tonight.  I'm going to need it.

I just realised after the girls were already settled in bed that today is their dad's 30th birthday.  I had meant to get them to give him a phone call, but with all the other trauma, I completely forgot about it.  I hope he doesn't mind too much.  Hopefully he'll be having too much fun and it will have slipped his mind that we didn't call.

what a horrible experience for you all. Glad he's getting better and that he can laugh it off as a Harry Potter Scar. Did you all sleep well in the end, and are the girls settled again?

Hi Kathryn

Yeah - we're all doing better too.  It took a few days to feel normal again, though.

Hi Marg

It's amazing how tough these kids are!!  Sometimes I think it's worse watching something than actually having it happen to you.  Thankfully everyone is doing better now.

Thanks Thuy.

I think it's getting better, but it was pretty horrible...  I was so glad to hear from his mum that he was doing okay last night.

Re: Went in an ambulance today

Thanks Helen.  In the night one of the girls woke me for something, and then I couldn't get back to sleep cause i kept seeing that nasty head wound again and again.  Ended up with the light on and reading for a couple of hours before I could the image out of my mind enough to sleep.

Knees are definitely improving - though still sore, particularly when I'm on my feet for a long time.  And I hurt them a lot yesterday when I went down on them to deal with the injury.  I didn't worry about it at the time (adrenaline is great for that), but I've been paying for it today.  Though still its not as bad as it was a week ago.

What a day!  Fun and games galore, and not all of it good.  At least the little man is ok.  I'm sure your girls will be too once they see that he is.  Accidents happen, and we can do everything to prevent them, but kids find their ways.

Luckily BF had the day off too, or it could have been a very crowded ambulance! lol.

Try and get some sleep and don't worry about your girls dad, he'll understand, and if he doesn't, you can always plan ways to make him take a trip in the ambulance! lol.

Re: Went in an ambulance today

LOL!  I think you have an evil streak Arna!  I spoke to the girls' dad tonight and he was understanding.  I was a bit worried as the girls talked to him first and started relating the story as only kids can - leaving out the important details of who they were talking about - so I had to explain that both the girls were fine and it was another kid who had been hurt.

I am so grateful BF was home.  I'm not sure how we would have managed if he hadn't been there.

Definitely - I think I ended up having a big afternoon nap today which I really needed after yesterday's excitement.

Poor you I'm sure it frightened them all aswell as you anyway you did the right thing calling the ambulance and it's amazing how quickly these hurts heal with sometimes no scar at all. We all hate seeing children get hurt

Re: Went in an ambulance today

It really was quite traumatic.  I realised how badly it affected me last night when BF came to bed and had a drop of blood on his lip from a small cut and I pretty much lost it.  The girls have needed extra help to get to sleep the last couple of nights as well.  They keep saying they keep dreaming of him falling down and hurting himself and being covered in blood.
