Ignorant, insulting people

Comment Published at 04:3404:3422 comments22 comments37 Visits37 VisitsReport

AaveARRGGHHH!!! I have placed an entry on a forum which I also comment on sometimes.Today, I wrote about a celeb that has advertised a slimming product and claimed to have lost 4 stone due to eating healthy and exercise. She looks amazing and as a presenter she is my fave. But,I have real concerns that people in the public eye pontificate to the public about how to acheive their 'perfect' weight.I have seen young women with anorexia and bulimia being interviewed by her and I'm quite miffed that this woman has pulled the wool over vulnerable womens eyes.

There are women out there with major weight related health issues who need encouragement and genuine advice on how to lose weight. The media places enormous strain on society to look slim and perfect. This makes me so mad!!

I wrote this as my blog today because some twit on the forum I go on said I was jealous.AARRGGHH> It's not that at all.I have lost weight recently going to a slimming club and it's been bloody hard work and I have been successful in doing so.It's not about a weight issue at all-it's about honesty, decency and the ability to admit our faults and failings.

The media has a lot to answer for as regards body image and obesity levels rising.Could go on and on about this, I am so mad.

The other side of the coin is if you've always been skinny and ppl think you must starve yourself to do it. How about everyone forgeting about size and think of the person they are inside. Personality counts much more.

Re: Ignorant, insulting people

I agree that the desire to be skinny has gone overboard. I feel like things may be changing a little bit though. There are a few famous people who have accepted their less than stick-thin figures (Queen Latifah and J-Lo are examples often given), and like it or not, I believe this helps the "average Jane" accept herself too! It's just silly (and sometimes dangerous) for women to strive so hard for an unrealistic body size. Speaking of which, too much emphasis is often put on what clothing size a person wears! So ridiculous! I have finally accepted the fact that my butt is BIG and there are more important things to worry about in life than dreaming of some body you're never going to get! It's all about FEELING great, isn't it?!

That's great you are finding success with the slimming club you're in. I hope you are feeling great too!

Re: Ignorant, insulting people

I don't know what all the fuss is about with having to be skinny. I used to make $30-$50 per hours as an art model and got less work the less curves I had, so summer was a bugger cause I'd loose weight and loose work.

The best thing my fella ever said to me was that he loves me, even if I weighed 400 lbs and knocked shit off tables with my arse, that wouldn't change. LOL

I've known too many people that have been overweight that have been happier, healthier, fitter, and have more energy than many skinny people I've known. Skinny doesn't equal low cholestrol, that's for sure!

Re: Ignorant, insulting people

I totally agree with you and this is what I'm trying to say;

This person always said on TV that she was happy with her curves and weight and would cheer being a bigger person.

Then she started losing weight quickly and advertising in magazines , on TV, and on billboards a food slimming product.

Her husband, LIVE ON TV said she had lost weight by eating healthy and exercise.

This celeb has shown masses of sympathy to young women with eating disorders and advised them the best way to control weight was to eat healthily.

A national newspaper divulges that she has had a gastric band fitted, which at first on Saturday, her agent denied.

Yesterday she admitted that it was for herself and that 5 people knew.

This is all well and good. But,what about the women that have been on her show about their weight and through her advice and empathy, have dieted and exercised and worked bloody hard-only to find she has had this operation. Now,I am not against this surgery at all and have watched lots of documentaries on the subject.I just don't understand why if she wasn't ashamed of it,why did'nt she come clean before the media found out?

Celebrities are people like you and me.I also know that another celebrity ON THE SAME SHOW, that has been writing a diet diary in a magazine has been found to have had the same surgery.

I agree that there are far worse celebs out there involved with drugs and alcohol, but I don't believe there are as many girls out there wanting to become drug addicts or alcoholics as there are that want to be slim.

Amazing she looks with a natural talent with people and their problems-honest,she hasn't been. She has given the illusion of dieting and exercising alone being her aid to weight loss and this hasn't been the case.

I know some people will disagree with my views but what about our young, vulnerable women who read endless magazines desiring the perfect body-it is all wrong.

Re: Ignorant, insulting people

As your original blog outlines that being judged by others is hurtful, can you imagine how it feels when that is amplified by coverage of your personal life in national newspapers, so she decided not to tell the world about her gastric band, it's no-ones business but her own. I am a fan of hers and as a fat person myself always admired her image but we all know that being fat (or too skinny) is not great for your health, I do believe that the person in question reached a certain age and was concerned about the effect of being overweight on her health. She is also a mother and probably is very aware of the pressure on young women to conform to a certain body image, I really feel that she in no way meant to mislead anyone or promote extreme weight loss to young people.

Whose to say that she had not tried to lose this weight naturally, over eating can be an addiction just like drugs or alchol, would you prevent a drug addict from getting medical help for their problem? and who said she was ashamed of it?

Plus you need to give teenage girls some credit, they know that recreational use of certain drugs can boost weight loss as well as drinking, they may not aspire to be addicts but who does?

Re: Ignorant, insulting people

I don't believe that the celebrity you are talking about claimed to have lost weight using the product she advertises, just that it can be an aid to weight loss with a calorie controlled diet. Personally I think the person in question looks great and how she lost that weight is her own business whether it be through diet or surgical aids, I have never known this person to sit in judgement of any of the people she interviews which I feel adds to her appeal, I feel that she should not have to explain herself or her own personal decisions.

On the other hand it was wrong for people on that forum to stand in judement of you and the reasons why you posted your opinion (as you are entitled to) but do we not all stand in judgement via the media of people in public life.

Re: Ignorant, insulting people

The thing is,she is in magazines and on certain websites claiming that using the product she advertises aids weight loss, which it does because I use it.But, from the point of view of a young girl with weight issues bordering anorexia or bulimia it's just not a good image.I love this presenter and she is my favourite because she shows empathy with all walks of life. This is why someone that is so admired should be honest. Her husband has also said-and I heard it said, that the weight loss was due to eating less and exercise. What about the people who can't afford this operation even if their circumstances and health depend on it?

I think she looks amazing and good on her,but she has been deceitful to her fans and women who have at looked at her for inspiration.

Re: Ignorant, insulting people

The procedure that it is claimed she has had does not restrict what you eat just how much you eat, so she has lost weight by eating healthily plus has she ever (in person) said it was an unaided weight loss. There are far far worse role models out there who are promoting extreme weight loss (amongst other things) as the thing to do,whose music and image are directed towards youth culture and whose influences are far stronger to school age children then a daytime T.V host.

I personally have experienced an aided weight loss plan (when I had my jaws wired) and I know that this was not a step that I took lightly and medical pros and cons had to be weighted up carefully, to have a surgical procedure for weight loss is not the easy option that it is betrayed to be. I do read celebrity magazines and visit "gossip" columns online but I take what I read with a pinch of salt, the only people that know the truth are the people involved, the rest of us can only speculate.

Re: Ignorant, insulting people

OMG.. I know exactly how you feel...

It annoys me too...

And the stupid thing is, you got told you're "jealous" simply because you have an opinion different to other people, and that's not true at all !!!!!!!!

I'm sick of the the portrayal of "perfect" women in the media...
I'm not exactly underweight, I would say I'm "curvy"...

And I'm SICK of people thinking that if you're not "skinny", then the only other thing you can be is "fat".. and that's BS...
My brother, who is studying to become a Personal Trainer, does bodybuilding and goes to the gym, and he tells me that that IS BS...
People should get that there are more than two bloody body types !!!! lol

I am so tired of the media encouraging people to believe that "skinny" is the only way to go...
It's funny, it's more socially acceptable to be "extra thin" than it to be "a little overweight"...
And thing is, the "extra thin" person could be the MORE unhealthy of the two...

I have a husband who loves me for me..
I've put on 15 kgs since I met him.. yet he loves me more than he did the day he met me...
And he doesn't care at all what I look like, cuz that's not who he fell in love with...

If people loved others for what they were truly were 'inside' then the world wouldn't be so messed up...

I TOTALLY agree with your viewpoint..
And don't even let anyone make you feel bad for speaking your opinion and believing that it's what inside that counts :)

I think it's ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL that you've been putting in the hard work..
And been getting the results :)
These are people that me and my brother respect...
Those who set a goal and go for it :)

And the main thing is, losing weight should be about maintaining a healthy lifestyle..
Not aiming to look stick-thin :)

Thank you sharing this...
I TOTALLY agree with you !!!!!

Love Thuy xox

Re: Ignorant, insulting people

Thanks so much for your reply,at last someone that agrees with me wholeheartedly.Even my partner said this morning when I mentioned it to him that it is nobody elses business but theirs.Wrong, but that,s his view.Men don't have concerns about weight and size like women and I don't believe a man can truly understand a womans point of view.My man loves me dearly, I know that. After I met him I put on nearly 3 stone(don't know what that is in kilos). He says he will love me no matter what my size.If you have issues with your weight though, sometimes mens opinions can not matter so much as a womans. Thanks again,Thuy,Lisa xx

Re: Ignorant, insulting people

No problem about the reply, glad to help :)

But yeah, I agree, it's your partner's point of view :)
But like you, I still feel that when people are encouraging others, especially YOUNG women, to base their self-worth on their appearance, is just wrong...
Things like this lead to eating disorders and other psychological problems...

Yep, I agree...
Men don't have concerns like we do...
They don't get the pressure from other peers, not the way we do anyway...
Not to say that they don't have pressures too :)

That's great that your man loves you for you !!!!!

Oh, and I agree, with your last statement about a woman's opinion meaning most important to another woman...
This is EXACTLY why women should be encouraging other women to love themselves for their inner beauty..
Not shooting them down for not being stick-thin !!!!!

This is a good topic, could ramble on for ages. hahahahahahaha

Re: Ignorant, insulting people

You know, only very recently have I became more comfortable within my own skin. I'm not particularly over weight at all but I'm definately no skinny minnie either. I don't over-eat, unless of course it's that time of the month and well.....watch out!!!!!!

I've been watching an amazing new show on T.V with Carson Cressley 'How to Look Good Naked' and I've been telling EVERYONE to watch it. It is going to do such amazing things for women, it throws all stereotypes out the window and shows women what we really look like and that how we see ourselves is all a state of mind.

I love 'How to look good naked'.Over here the presenter is Gok Wan and he is fantastic at making women feel great about themselves no matter what their shape or size. That is exactly my point about honesty.People need to be honest about their shortcomings whether being a celeb or joe public.
