Poor Thing

Comment Published at 05:0005:0017 comments17 comments53 Visits53 VisitsReport

It is December in Canada and this is what I remember as a kid! The frigid winds are high blowing snow straight across, the snow is drifted around everything,it's cold! The wind is making it colder and the snow is still coming down! The vehicles are covered and the wind is keeping the snow swirling above them. Now this is winter!

Every so often Hubby and I see things differently. Surprise there! You'd think after all these decades together that there would be some melt, some blur into one an other....but there isn't. This latest thing is over the life of one mouse. Poor little thing. Opppsss,so you know my side. LOL! I see mice as beautiful little creatures. They are so small and yet so perfect. Oh I know some of you are going eeeuuhhh, mice...but then I think they have the right to be as much as we do. This poor little mouse lost his life due to my Husband setting a trap. I know all the desease and dirt and I do know how they lay track but still! I felt so,so bad. Hubby came up out of the basement and took one look at me and said...oh for pete's sake. Since when did Pete want to murder mice?? I said. Marg, you want me to leave the trap? Yes,I do. He then informs me of damage and gross habits of mice. I think some human habits are gross and they certainly cause willful damage but we don't go around killing them. The mice have purpose and are only here because they are looking to nest for the winter and they are hungry. Have you ever looked at a mouse,we have the cute little field mice. Little rounded ears, soft brown fur on the back and creamy toned under bellies. They startle me if they dart but they are only about a quarter ounce and mean you no harm. They are food for hawks and snakes and carry grain and other seeds in the wild. This area use to be orchard,so I'm sure mice were every where. So I'm sad over the untimely death of one little mouse so shoot me!!! I have the right to feel sad if I want to and just because you see it the other way Hubby doesn't mean I have to. I mean yes, I see that they chew through things and shouldn't be in houses but then we should have a house that they can't get into. So there's my thoughts for this beautiful snowy day. Too bad it's marred by the death of an innocent little creature. What do you think about this? I'm wondering if Hubby is right(good grief, perish the thought!) .

Re: Poor Thing
Mice?  Hhhmmm, I'm a cruel person sometimes.  I hate doing it, but when the sweet little creatures start eating me out of house and home, they have to go.  And no dropping them over the neighbours fence either, little buggers come straight back!  We treat them by putting crunchy peanut butter on the trap!  They go out in style!  I did keep mice as pets, but someone at the petshop stuffed up and gave me males and females!  Yep, got over run with babies.  That's ok, they got feed to a friends lizard! lol.  Now how's that for cruel?

Re: Poor Thing
Yuck, yuck, yuck!!! When we went through the lizard stage with the kids the things ate crickets which I had a tough time with. But feeding live stuff...gross! I know (in my mind I do understand) the it is all the food chain thingy but nope...not for me. I'd be grossed out all day just seeing the darn lizard with a cricket leg hanging out it's mouth...why do they not eat everything or at least wipe their months??? Uncivilized, lol!

Re: Poor Thing
Oh my.. We had a big mouse trap that kept the little smelly but cute things alive...
dad used to let them go out back of the farm... Mind you that was way out back and we did not have any snow issues...

Um I am of two minds about killing mice..  If you have ever heard or read anything about the plague of mice that was in Australia you would understand what I mean... :)

But you can't help the way you feel.. My step daughter has two pet mice.. She keeps them at her mums place... :)

Re: Poor Thing

Papa can have the job if the job gets done! I think that's kinda sweet,a Daddy who will do the tucking in and a boy that loves his Daddy tucking him in!

Oh Jess, what's up with the pigs or do I want to know??? Pigs are not native to Australia, were mice?

Re: Poor Thing
Oh Marg I would have to say I'm with you on this one, we had a little mouse friend a few months ago, while watching tv one night I saw his little head pop around from the back of the tv unit, without me saying anything, J said oh must get the bait out......  I said what for who is he hurting,  he said that one cute little mouse probably has just had 100 babies that are all ready to come out and run all over our house.....  I said so you feel good about killing their mother then do you.... His answer was no of course not but it has to be done......  I said well if their is a hundred as you say more then why kill one, whats that going to achieve??? that he couldn't answer, however the traps were set......  The good thing is that little mouse heard our conversation because we never caught him lol...... xxx

Re: Poor Thing
Darn good thing they don't organize!!! We wouldn't stand a chance!  My son has tried everything, the things that emit noise to scent scare, nothing works. I know they can't be in houses but we just put the houses in the wrong places!

Re: Poor Thing
Sure, they're cute.  I don't mind seeing them.  But when they are in my basement, possibly leaving their droppings on my daughters toys and dress-up clothes, I want them outta there as quick as possible!  Can you tell we had one, too?  It darted across the room when I was going through Arianna's old clothing so I could pass it all on to a friend.  Not only did it startle me, but those clothes had been sitting on the floor for a couple days, I was scared he'd chewed through some it.  No fun.  Hubby set a trap, but I guess he knew what we were up to, because we never trapped it and haven't seen any evidence that he's still around.  Thank goodness!
