Late to the game (I'm late to everything these days), but just wanted to add my hope that things are better now. I hate feeling as though I've been alienated from the person I rely on the most. It's like walking on a ship deck during a typhoon.

I like Bear's idea of just plowing ahead and doing some happy-feeling things, in hopes that the happiness will follow. Very wise, your boy.

I am so, so sorry. Nothing rocks the ground beneath you like really bad spouse-fights. Well, there are things but spouse fights are right up there near the top of the list.

I'm sending you good energy....warm fuzzy on a cold snowy night (have you looked out the window, its glorious!)

Hope to see you soon! Blessed Christmas!

Oh, Elizabeth. That just sucks. It's always so hard when fighting, and especially so when you'd thought that you wouldn't have 'that fight' again. (Or 'that kind' of fight.) So many kudos to you for picking yourselves up and getting back in it - this stuff isn't easy, and unfortunately it's the hardest times when we need the most fortitude. I'll be thinking good thoughts for you, hoping that you make it back to solid ground soon.

It seems quite impossible that when I was first introduced to Bear via your blog, he was just a wee little boy. An adorable wee little boy, but still. And now he's all grown up enough to ask, "The bribing thing?"

Holy moly. Somehow I feel incredibly old now.

And dittos. He's an awesome kid.

Fighting with people we love is the worst because it can be so cruel. Cruel because you love each other and you know which buttons to push. If you didn't, it wouldn't hurt so much, you know?

The important thing is that you both got back up in the cab of that semi and decided to make the U-turn, to steal your metaphor. It could have been so easy to let anger breed resentment and then emptiness. And maybe you know something now you didn't know before about who you are and who he is? For good or bad.

You're not a ...

I can give you some suggestions with the bills. If they're medical bills, call the hospital/drs. office and see if you can have some expenses reduced or completely written off. Hospitals are more likely to that than doctors, but try anyway.

Where insurance is concerned, you may want to consider hospitalization coverage only for CD, if he's in good health (but not for Bear or yourself as you would have a difficult time getting insurance coverage in the future if you dropped it now and reapplied).

As far as making amends for those who were "left behind". Tough, they can either ...

As I read this, my husband is making a nice beef barley soup for dinner. We are sufficiently excited about it that we are eating it as part of our Christmas tree trimming, eggnog and hot cider drinking, and December birthday celebrating Sunday evening (my Mom being the December birthday person). We are having soup and bread for dinner and cake for dessert.

I myself like to make soup, too. Especially in the winter.

So, yes, I completely agree with you on the whole soup-making concept!

I believe in the power of soup so much that at work, we've started a soup club. (Yes, teachers are nerds). Every Wednesday, another person takes a turn making soup for the entire group for lunch. To be fair, we've branched out a bit into "non-soup" foods, but the general feeling is still there. A warm, homecooked meal, shared with friends. It brings us together in a way bratty students never could.
