Zaras first trip to the hospital

Comment Published at 03:0803:0832 comments32 comments53 Visits53 VisitsReport

Well yesterday was a shocker of a day for us. Zara is a little jaundice so she ahd a heel prick test yesterday and the levels came back abit too high so the doctor called me and asked me to go back that day to do another one to monitor them. So we were shopping, (new maternity bra's for me Woo Hoo!) and so we head over to Sullivan Nicholaides to see Cathy, my lovely needle nurse. So poor Zara had to have another heel prick test and she also had a wee test. I had a little stress as she wasnt jaundice at the hospital, it has come on since she left and it scared me that there was something wrong.

That afternoon I was chatting to my mum waiting for my friend to come over so we can catch up and I can show off Zara properly when the doctor rang and left a message saying her billiruben levels are dropping steadily adn she doesnt need anymore tests, yay. Then she calls my mobile straight away, and tells me that she got the urine results and they were abnormal and that we need to take Zara into the hospital now, well that is more of a scare than I needed. I hung up and burst into tears with mum who was still on the other line, then Megan turned up so when Daniel got home from picking up Caitlin she took her to her house for the night and off we went to the hospital.

We didnt really have to wait too long there, the doctor we had was great,(and a spunk too, just on the side!)  he asked lots of questions and after I told him that she eats, sleeps, wees and poos like a perfect baby I think he was just wondering why we had been sent there. He explained that sometimes the samples are contaminated by the skin and that we need to get a clear sample, from a catheter. Oh my poor little poppet! She screamed, she was not impressed with this at all, and rightly so, but part way through she did a wee and they caught it in a jar and luckily didnt need to continue.

After waiting ages for the doc to come back he said that our healthy baby is in fact a healthy baby and we should go home and enjoy her.

So it was just a contaminated sample, gosh I can tell you I was so upset and so worried! We have never had more than an ear infection with Caitlin so I really didnt know how I would cope if my little baby girl was sick. I am so greatfull that she is ok, more than ok, she is perfect!

Oh Nikki, i have  not been around for a few days and it seems i've missed so much. I'm thrilled that everything turned out great for Zara, with it just being a contaminated sample, but i can only imagine the worry and stress you were under til you found out the good news.

I second the doctors remark, enjoy your healthy little baby girl.

Love Janice xxxx

Re: Zaras first trip to the hospital

Gosh, that must have been pretty scary.  At least little Zara (love the name!) is ok.  I've always been told to let my babies lay in the sun (morning sun preferably) for about 15 minutes with at least the arms, legs and face in the sun.  Jaundice is 'cured' by vitamin D which is found in sunlight and is used in the special cribs at the hospital too.  It will help to make it go away quicker as it neutralises the belliruben in the liver.  Even on a cloudy day, just being by a window that has brightish light will help.

Besides which, babies love basking in the sun for a while! lol.  Hope you are over the fright now and getting back to enjoying your gorgeous little girl.

Hey Arna, thanks, we only just decided on it just before she decided to come on out!
The jaundice is almost gone now, luckily, just a little yellow looking in her eyes, we have had some lovely days and I have her bath set up next to the window which she is loving!

Re: Zaras first trip to the hospital

Jaundice is very common - all my guys had it and T's biliruben was really high, a bit of sunshine does the trick.

Not nice all those tests but better to be on the safe side....and it all turned out fine, well more than fine - perfect!

Re: Zaras first trip to the hospital

hey Julie, lucky we have finally had a few sunny days! She had a lovely bath in the sunlight today, thoroughly enjoyed it!
I know, ultimately they had to check it out, and lucky they did otherwise it could have been alot worse then us sitting in the A&E waiting room for awhile.

Cor you are so distressed but your eyeballs are still working good huh? Don't be too worried about the jaundice, sounds like they are taking good care of her by keeping such a close eye on it xox

Re: Zaras first trip to the hospital

That must of been terrifying. Glad the news is all good though. Sometimes nurses and doctors place unnessacary  stress on us parents. But it makes us cherish our precious ones all the more. By the way congrats. (it's a little late .sorry! lol)
