Is voting more trouble than it is worth?

Comment Published at 22:3122:316 comments6 comments73 Visits73 VisitsReport
I have noticed that once again voting appears to be something that people are getting upset about. Now I do understand why Minti has voting - to rank the advice or quality of the comments but seeing that it appears to have become more of a popularity contest than a quality control I have to wonder if Minti wouldn't be a better place without it.
By popularity contest I am referring to the people who vote based on who wrote the comment or advice rather than by the content. I have noticed much 'revenge' voting. It is rumoured that some people even get on msn and tell other people what to vote on and how to vote.

People appear to be getting upset by how other people voted and sometimes how they think someone voted. With the anonymous voting it is not really possible to know who really gave you the one star or five star voting.

I wonder if Minti wouldn't be a better place without the ranking and voting. What do you think?

I can not believe that this seems to be getting worse. It has been a while since I have been online, but to think that people are going to the trouble of msn is just really pathetic, childish and totally the opposite of what minti is all about. I have just finished reading some of the current advice and, really, what is going on??  There does seem to be a need for a different system. Maybe seeing who has voted what may make a difference.

I think that if that people had to show who they were, then some people would be afraid to vote, and some pretty ordinary advice (and let's face it, there is some around), would get voted highly, as only people who were going to vote highly would vote.  That would really take a lot of integrity away from the site, as people would get sick of sifting through rubbish to find the truly good, original, helpful, information.

I for one vote it as I see it, and I am happy to explain why I vote and how I vote - however not on every single piece of advice - for some doesn't warrant the time it would take.  This is why I have blogged on it, so that anyone who wants to know what I am about can read it there.

Re: Is voting more trouble than it is worth?
Hi - I am back again to mess up your blog...  The problem is bad advice is floating to the top.  People are continuing to post things that are more appropriate to blogs, and Q&A in the advice section.  If they get voted down and advised where to move it to - they are just leaving it there, and sometimes the titles are interesting enough that they keep getting hits.  After their original mistake, they then compound it by writing 'advice' to complain about how they got voted down by making a mistake???!!!  Like there is only a certain amount of sympathy to be had when people continue to do the same thing over and over...

Since it seems to be so difficult for people to read Q&A, find out how to get started and read the Minti Editorial Guidelines, I made up some advice linking to all of the relevant information.  I called it Welcome to Minti - however I think that there are a lot of existing members who need to read it.

Now with the new system, some Q&A comments are ending up in there as advice - I am not sure whether the people mean to post them there or not - however they also should do the right thing and remove it.

I must resist the temptation to go through and add the link to all the advice that ISN'T ADVICE, and since I would only vote 1 star on a lot of it, I won't vote either... Then people will complain about people reading and NOT voting.  You can't win - the people that don't understand how things work, are the ones who need to learn, however they don't want to??/!!!

OK, whinge over for the day... Er you can whinge in my lounge or blog any day to pay me back!  Luv Lui.

i think its good to get the comments as you know that others can see and understand why we wote about things... My wish is that everyone stop bagging out msn as its not as bad and some of us do enjoy speaking to the ones that leave comments on our advise.... Also i have found that if i need advise and need it quick on jump on msn before minti as well....

Wow, vulcan mind meld... How did I miss this???  I am guessing the only way around it is to have advice voted on before it goes live...  Like there could be a set criteria that advice has to meet to pass.  It wouldn't be that hard to work out, and then if something wasn't quite up to it, or incorrect, the author would be able to make changes before other people got their hands on it to pass comment.  All in all, we could be sure it was advice that was published, and the author would be more likely to get great feedback, and the ranking/voting could be based on number of hits or something instead.

Re: Is voting more trouble than it is worth?
I think the voting can be useful because that way the advice that isn't that great doesn't float to the top.
But I think abusing the system is not good, especially if the advice is really quite bad.

People tend to have a competitive streak in their nature, especially nowadays as previous working women where we need to compete against others in our workplace. Plus some of us need that ego massaged like, "yes, my ___ rocks!" type thing.

Voting is pretty much just for fun, but I think people (like in my example above) just take it too seriously.
