A comparison

Here is a link to a side by side comparison of human milk versus formula.
Tell me again why we don't have human milk banks!
How many people would prefer a much inferior artificial blood substitute than donated blood from a blood bank? Give me the real thing (screened for viruses etc) any day!

Re: A comparison
Well after having a quick look on the net is appears that there will be a mothers milk bank established this year with funding from the government. Although with the change of government that may not happen. On a personal note, I wouldn't use one but if I was able to would donate to one if I was able too. My choice I suppose.

As for the one of the claims that the aritcle you linked to (1996???) that formula has been linked to lower intelligence scores..... well....... again after a search of the net I found many articles that have found no link whatsoever and then some that did. That's the thing with science, it's always changing it's findings. Sometimes there is no exact science. If the claim is right then..... well can someone please explain to me how my sister who was formula fed from the start, is an Environmental Scientist with an IQ of 160?  I am fairly sure that there are many other formula fed babies that have average to above average intelligence. Then again I am no scientist so what would I know.

Re: A comparison

Hi there. If I may butt in...   but first I just want to say that I am not taking sides on this.

What I want to point out is that studies do not say A leads to B 100% of the time. All studies do is find the relationships between 2 or more things and then compare that to whatever is in question.  This is to say that if we hear a study that says breastfed babies have a higher IQ (hypothetically, let's say by 10 points) than those who have been formula fed - this doesn't mean that ALL babies breastfed will be have higher IQs. The study will just simply tell you the percentage.

Re: A comparison
This quote from this article may help answer your question

A study published in 2007 found a VERY interesting relationship between breastfeeding and intelligence: it showed that whether breastfeeding affects a child's intelligence depends on a certain gene. In 90% of the children, the gene is such a way that breastfeeding DOES affect the child's intelligence, probably by affecting the fatty acid metabolism, or the way the body processes fatty acids. In the remaining 10%, breastfeeding versus bottle-feeding has no effect on intelligence.

This important finding now sheds some light on the previous studies that have had mixed results: there is another counfounding factor there, in the children's genetic material. But it further confirms the intellectual advantage breastfeeding can give for 90% of the children. (And of course even the 10% are helped by breast milk in other ways.)

The main point I am trying to make is that mothers are not being given a choice. The choice between human milk from a milk bank and formula should have been freely available to mothers long before now!

Re: A comparison
There was once a choice until the HIV/AIDS epidemic. If you look more closely at my comment you'll see that there will be a mothers milk bank started this year pending this governments approval. It was approved by the former health minister so maybe start writing to the current and voice your concerns with them.

Re: A comparison

Completely agree with you Fi.  Both my kids were/are bottle fed with formula. They are both smart, strong healthy kids. I would never get breast milk from a milk bank.
