Poor dont change breastfeeding habits

Comment Published at 04:1504:153 comments3 comments110 Visits110 VisitsReport

Not a great title for the article but actually quite a good article. Like the article I blogged about earlier today this one talks about how breastfeeding rates are lower for women from lower income families but this one also contains practical ideas of how the government could actually support breastfeeding mothers. As I said earlier by support I do not mean pressuring mothers to breastfeed or guilting them into it. I mean real support

"They need baby friendly-accredited maternity hospitals, increased breastfeeding help in the community and paid maternity leave - not simply another government campaign extolling the virtues of breastfeeding."

wow. That is really sad...my mum breastfed both me and my sister so I always expected I would breasfeed my child/children and so I did....it is such a great bonding experience if you are able to do it. I do understand that some people are not abl to but I feel sad when there is not enough support out there for some mums to do it....

Re: Poor dont change breastfeeding habits

have to agree with you here.

im from a pretty bad area very low income, in fact im poor as dirt myself lol

but it DID shock me when i had tobias... i would feed him in public and often kids up to the ages of ten or eleven would approach me asking me what i was doing? they had NEVER seen anyone breastfeed before! i found it really shocking really as ive grown up around breastfeeding mothers and never thought anything of it?

also i find that the adults will leave the room if i breastfeed and shut the door on me if im at the neighbourhhod centre.

ive found a couple of supportive ppl but even they didnt breastfeed themselves they wish they had though.

so in my small way i try to educate ppl as best i can on breastfeeding without trying to put pressure on them, education is a big thing and when its not available there will never be any changes made...

thanks nat
