Health Centre Visit

Comment Published at 15:3815:3831 comments31 comments58 Visits58 VisitsReport

I took Katelyn to the health centre last week for her 8 month check it was a little late but with xmas and new years the health centre was closed.

I not very fond of my health centre sister but being in a small town I dont have the choice to change she is very quick to call DHS on you? when Katelyn was 1 month old she told me that if I didnt stop breast feeding she would call them because by her books Katelyn wasnt putting on enough weight. I told her that I wouldnt stop and I invite her to call them.

then on the next visit I told her that I was thinking of starting Katelyn on solids as I started her brother at 3 months as well, she told me that if i did start her before 4 months she would call DHS again. I started Katelyn on solids and just didnt tell her.

now last week she asked me what sort of food I was feeding Katelyn and my reply was "she eats everything we eat" and she really likes silverside, cheese and pickle sandwiches. and once again she said if I continue to feed her silverside she would call DHS???? I asked whats wrong with silverside and she said "nothing, but I cant see how silverside, cheese and pickles goes together? I would never eat them together"

so its all about her now!!!

I do want to see the health centre just to get Katelyns weights and see that she is developing well but I just cant stand this woman.

will finish my vent here and go and feed Katelyn some sort of food that she shouldnt have!!!

Love Anita XXX

Re: Health Centre Visit

The comment that she would call DHS on you for feeding your child something she doesn't think belongs together is just rediculous.  I would report her.  That behavior is totally inappropriate.  She doesn't sound very helpful at all.  And being in a small town, you need someone who is knowledgable and helpful.  What an ass.

Re: Health Centre Visit

If your doctor bulk bills children and has a nurse then she could do all the weigh ins and the like and if there are any queries she can buzz the doc and ask.

I didnt like one of the nurses either so ended up at my doctors surgery for it all including injections. I got to speak to someone about my concerns and she either fixed them or called in the doctor. They were marvelous and didnt bat an eyelid at the things I was asking and actually went out of their way to be helpful rather than a hinderance.

Re: Health Centre Visit

sounds like you should actully report this nurse, because threating dhs action for wanting to breast feed or feeding silver side, is not something someone in the health proffession should be doing.  call the nurses board and explain your situation. If your daughter wasnt putting on enough weight and you wanted to continue breast feeding she should have offered you suggestions on ways to supplement the breast milk or increase the vitamins and mineral possibly contained within the breast milk. not theaten dhs. same with when you start soilds it is a guideline that has been developed at 6 months in aim to reduce the incidence of GUT disease, not a must only do. so for your sake and the sake of all other mothers who are probably experiencing similar treatment but too scared to speak up, call the nurses board. Since you use the term dhs, im guessing your in ocuntry vic, so the site where you can get the info is

nbv.org.au good luck.

Re: Health Centre Visit

hay thanks for the advice and the link, I think with what everyone is saying I will report her, I just hope I can do it without giving my name, we live in a town of only 500 people so it wouldnt be hard to find out who it was.

thanks again XXX

Re: Health Centre Visit

Good luck with it. Its not easy. I probably was looking at it more from another health proffesional side than your side, and I think she needs to be reported because you and your daughter deserve good care, not threats that are actually blackmail. And beside from a mothers point of view she can go jump because she isnt helping you at all. good luck

Hi minti mum,

I feel much better now, I know I'm doing a great job with the kids. I guess she has so many problems in her life that she has to make me look bad just so she will feel better about herself I cant give any other reason for her behavour.

Re: Health Centre Visit

Hun, realistically, child health nurses are only there for if you are concerned, your child has a known problem or for those who have been ordered to it by the courts.  If you are satisfied with Katelyn's progress, then stop seeing the nurse, she doesn't care about you or your family and is clearly a stubborn pig head...I better not finish that sentence! lol.

If you have Katelyn's health record book, then all the info and 'tests'need for her milestones is in there.  You can do them all yourself, and if you have any concerns, then see the health nurse after asking minti first! lol.

I was lucky with my first, not only was the clinic held 100m from my front door, but they were fabulous and so open minded, to the point they were rather distressed my 4 week old had not tasted ice cream! rofl.

What you feed your daughter is your business, and if you want to feed her sliverside, pickle and cheese sandwhiches, then where is the harm?  It is balanced meal after all.  Screw the nurse and go with your instincts!

Re: Health Centre Visit

Hay Arna, I was hoping you would coment on this one! you sooooo dont hold back.

I was concerned about Katelyn's weight for the first few months only because so lost so much weight when she was in special care.

now I go because I'm scared if I dont she will call DHS.

I know I'm a good mum and they have no reason to remove my children but you always have that worry in the back of your mind.

plus if they did remove the children where would they go? to there dad's!!! LOL, LOL, LOL HA, HA, HA (sorry)

Luv Anita

Re: Health Centre Visit

I call it how I see it and if others don't like it (refering to nurse), then they can go jump, preferably off a very high cliff so they have plenty of time for thinking on the way down.

You know, a visit from DHS would work in your favour.  they would come out, see you are doing a fantastic job and right her off as a nutcase! lol.  And, you would have it permenantly recorded that you are a great mum and should be cloned! lol.

Re: Health Centre Visit

You wouldn't believe how many child health care nurses are like this. I thought mine was bad until she went on leave and her replacement was horrible!! She made the majority of the mothers in my mum's group cry - one of the mums even went off at the nurse for what she was saying lol. And I had 2 appointments with her and she just never turned up to them. But I guess I was lucky in a way because if mother's in their 30's were copping it I could juist imagine what she would have said to me as a 19 year old mum. After the replacement nurse I grew to love my old nurse even if she is annoying and a little rude at times lol. But I stopped going once my son turned 18 months. You can always weigh and measure your child at home and follow their growth with the charts that should be included in a book you got from the hospital when you gave birth. And for the more serious side of things - just visit your doctor. I hope this health nurse gets over herself for your sake lol!! But I agree with everyone else - say you fed your child something really funny and watch her face as she recoils in horror LOL!!

Love Samantha xox

Re: Health Centre Visit

Hi Samantha,

I know the feeling I was 19 when I had Aaron I use to get the looks from the other Mums but my midwife then was beautiful, she was so helpful, it pisses me off the way you are looked at just because you are young does that make you a bad mother?

thanks for the coments,

Luv Anita XXX

Re: Health Centre Visit

pmsl! i love cheese silverside and pickles together your health nurse is a nutcase!

seriously i doubt that DHS even answers her calls anymore if she calls them over such insane stuff! i hate health nurses and doctors who tell ppl to quit breastfeeding! i was told to do the same and my kids were and are both fine.

i agree with you with foods there are a couple things like peanuts that i wont give tobias due to allergy risks but other than that he has eaten pretty much the same as us since he was about 6 months. your baby will grow up to be a terrific well adjusted awsum person and you can tell docs yourself! lol

Re: Health Centre Visit

You know how i feel about your health centre. You can see that Katelyn is developing the way she should even with silverside, pickle and cheese sandwiches. Next time you go in there tell the health nurse that Katelyn really enjoyed her prawns last night and even peeled them herself.

That's just sick. But it may just work, you might get a visit from DHS but because they want to see the beautiful art work you very talanted young lady did. And to see how mentally unstable the mother is to hang a nappy on the wall. hehehehehe

Hope she still likes her olives (the little sick freak) WHAT BABY LIKES OLIVES?????
