Daniel was complaining of mild tummy pains over the weekend, I didn't I confess take it to seriously!! Yesterday morning (Monday) I gave him a paracetamol and sent him to school only to get a call a few hours later that he wasn't well could I go and fetch him. I even spoke to him on the phone and questionned if he was really not well or if it was stress over the bullying, he got quite cross assuring me he wasn't well, so I collected him, on the way home I asked a few questions and he confessed it had been hurting to go to the toilet for a few days, both wee and pooh!!!!!
I got a doctor appointment for that afternoon, we took a urine sample which was showing slight protein but nothing alarming, as was his temperature, slightly up but not alarming, however what the doctor didn't like was the area of his pain, his description of the pain and the severity, she rang the hospital and I had to take him right up to the A & E department where the surgeon team would take a look to see if her fear of appendicitis was accurate.
It was mad in the A & E so we had an hour and a half wait, which considering all others had a 4 1/2 hour anticipated wait, i wasn't going to complain about that!!!!!!
The young surgeon was brilliant with Daniel, Daniel gave his whole medical history in a very straightforward "Daniel" way
For instance when asked when the pain got worse, he answered
"This morning I told Mum I could barely stand, she said take a paracetamol and go to school !!!!"
The dr and I cracked up, I laughed saying "Oh he has a terrible mother !!!!"
It was decided that whilst Daniel was in a lot of pain, the surgeons weren't entirely sure the problem was his appendix, so they took lots of bloods, and admitted him to the childrens ward for observation over night. I waited till very late when he was settled in the ward and just about asleep, then came home to Thomas, fortunately Amy had foreseen I would be worried about Thomas so had driven over and made a bed on the sofa bless her!!! I must have had a couple of hours sleep, then got up early and was back at the ward 7am today.
The surgeon from last night came around and said he was still 50/50 about operating, decideing to keep checking on his urine tests, temperature and pain level during the morning. Late morning the surgeon team came around and decided they didn't want to operate so were handing Daniel over to the Paediatrician team. I had to go to work at the school for a bit and Amy bless her again, turned up to say she wasn't working till later so would sit with Daniel whilst I went to work, so he wasn't on his own. Daniel was so pleased !!!!
After work I raced back to hospital and Amy had even got him to sleep!! He was now eating his lunch. Amy had to go off to her work so Daniel and I waited for the Paediatrician. When he came, he was adamant he felt it was an appendix problem, but said there may be another problem too which was causing distress to the appendix, he arranged for Daniel to have a stomach x ray and the results came back that he was some kind of block in his intestine. The paediatrician said he could sort that with medication but he was still not convinced the appendix is still a danger zone, in the end he was allowed Daniel to come home for two days, where I am to montior him, if the pain gets worse or anything else alarming happens, I am to take him straight back to the childrens ward by passing the GP and A & E where the surgeons may have to operate right away. As the medication for the blockage may interfere with any symptoms of Appendicitis I am not to give him this mediation for two days so they can be absoltely sure the appendix is fine.
Basically Daniel may have a grumbling appendix because of the other problem and if the other problem is sorted the appendix will settle. But to be absolutely sure the paediatrician wants those two days first to see what the appendix does.......if anything!!!
But I've had enough now !!!!! No more!!!!! LOL
