Daniel's Treat

Comment Published at 12:2612:2643 comments43 comments65 Visits65 VisitsReport

Its Daniels birthday tomorrow and he will be 11 but as he will be at school all day, I let him have his birthday treat a day early !!!!!! OK so it was my treat too

Thomas, Daniel, my brother Marc and I drove to London, where I had pre booked tickets to see the Dr Who exhibition at Earls Court. We are all devout Dr Who fans so we were all excited. At least I think we all were, Thomas always plays down all emotions, if he says its cool then he is extremely excited !!!!!!!

In the foyer of the exhibition is a model of the Tardis so that was Daniels first photo call !!!!!

The first "chamber" were the shop mannequins from the 1st episode with Christopher Eccleston as the Dr. Not a good omen for me, as it was clearly shop dummies and I was positive I saw one move and was terrified, jumped out of my skin and yelped !!!   much to the embarrassment of the boys and my brother !!!!!

The exhibition is set up really well and it kind of runs from chamber to chamber with most episodes covered. After the "scary" mannequins we were met by a talking model of everyones favourite Dr Who..........David Tennant !!!!!

Thomas was clearly reluctant to pose by the models..............(yawn 14 years old and acting it too !!!!) however I did manage to convince him to please let me take at least one picture !!!!!! We settled on this one of both boys in front of the Face of Boe.

We saw mock ups of prosthetics from various "monsters" from the series, really clever how they make them I have to say, and just about every character you can imagine from the recent three series of Dr Who.

Naturally the best is saved for the end but before we get to the "you know whats !!!" we were met up the Cybermen, again Daniel was more than happy to pose next to these threatening creatures

After a few more harmless monsters we met the Daleks, that in itself was quite funny, as they are probably one of the most scary sci fi monsters, I asked Daniel to stand in front of one of them, and the funniest thing happened as the Dalek came to life with a light show and two more emerged with the immortal words "Exterminate !!!!" Daniel literally jumped off the floor and we had to laugh at him. I did get a great pic of him later though.

We decided to go and get some lunch and ended up in the McDonalds by Picadilly Circus, then walked up Regent Street to Hamleys Toy Store, there are 7 floors of toys here so the rule was to cover each floor level by level and if we got separated no one went up or down a floor until we were altogether again. This was a great plan and worked really well, It was great, there are demos of some of the toys on each floor and the boys loved it.

Finally we caught the tube back to the car park and I drove home.

We have had a fantastic day and all decided we want to do the same day again in August when my brother, sister in law, nephew and niece are over from Iceland. It will be great !!!! Just maybe Sylvie and I can accidentally slip away and do some decent shopping of our own too

Re: Daniel's Treat

Happy birthday to Daniel. How lucky to get to go to the Dr Who exhibition! To be honest it scared the life out of me as a child. Gave me nightmares so not a big horror fan as a result.

Re: Daniel's Treat

"Exterminate! Exterminate!" is something I say when I'm getting out the bug spray and getting ready to kill. LOL I was a huge fan as a kid, but I haven't seen it in so many years I can't remember a lot of it. Tom Baker was the Doctor I was most familiar with, but thats just cause he's the one that was on TV the most at the time I was watching it. I loved the darleks, thought they were so cool! Oh dear, I think I just gave away that my evil streak wasn't something that evolved, seems I always had one! LOL

Happy birthday to Daniel. Good to see you all got to see something so unique and interesting to all of you! That's great stuff.

Re: Daniel's Treat

Tom Baker was my favourite Dr , before David Tennant, he really has taken over as being the very best, and everyone seems to say the same

Can imagine you exterminating a lot more than just bugs !!!!!

Re: Daniel's Treat

I lurve Dr Who and David Tennant. We watched it on Saturday and can't wait for the finale next Saturday.I wasn't really keen on Catherine Tate before she was in this but I think she's really good in it.A formidable assistant!

I bet Daniel loved it , my kids would love to go to the exhibition but we live a long way from London and I think it would be too far to go for a day out.

I might give the gorgeous Mr Tennant a ring later to see if I can borrow his TARDIS.I wish!

Love, Lisa xx

Re: Daniel's Treat

Sounds great!  I'm a big Dr Who fan too - would ask your favourite dr, but as you said "everyones favourite Dr Who..........David Tennant" I have to guess it's him - me too!  He's lovely!  Anyway, sounds like a great day - even if big brother was doing the whole teenage thing.  ON a side note, it's my little man's birthday this week too - the big 5!

Re: Daniel's Treat

Yay another David Tennant fan LOL

He is great isn't he.

Know what you mean about the Daleks, there was one at the exhibition where you could stand in the back and work the controls which made them a lot less scary too !!!

Re: Daniel's Treat

PS I have to say a few years ago (6? pre-children) we were in Sheffield and saw the dalek in an exhibition there - it was very funny and had kitchen appliances as it's weapons - kind of took all the fear away! These looked a bit more convincing!

Re: Daniel's Treat

Wow!  I bet it was a great day had by all.  We live so far away from any sort of interesting (for the kids) museums or galleries which is a shame.  So want to  move back to Canberra!!!! lol.  They have a fantastic science centre there.

I bet you all slept well last night, or maybe not if Daleks snuck home with you. lol.

Re: Daniel's Treat

wow, brilliant day! What a wonderful treat for Daniel. Dont tell him, but Im still thinking of him as you "9 year old" - so far behind! The exhibition looks great. Im definitely with you on David Tennant! I caught Saturdays repeat tonight (yipee - it's usually on during Sophie's bedtime and I forget when the repeats are on BBC7) and it was a shame to have an episode almost without him, though it was a great episode with Billy showing up!

Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANIEL! Ni'night!

Re: Daniel's Treat

David Tennant is THE DR isn't he !!!!!!!

We all think he is great, its the mix of his wit and mischievousness, you're right it was weird without him hardly featuring on saturday night, but what a great episode, the writing has just got better and better and definitely gave the right build up for a climatic end of series 2 parter
