Hypersensitive Gag Reflex

by nwagonComment Published at 20:0120:010 comments0 comments49 Visits49 VisitsReport

Well I found out on the weekend that my little boy, Caleb, has a hypersensitive Gag Reflex. I started him on solids when he was about 5 1/2 months old as he seemed to be showing all the signs of being ready for it (i.e. waking through the night for feeds, watching us eat & trying to grab the food, chewing on everything and wanting to put everything in his mouth). When I did attempt to feed him, he kept gagging on everything no matter how little I gave him nor the consistency of the food. Thankfully I have a very good friend who is a speach pathologist who came over on Saturday while I was feeding him and she assessed him and came to the conclusion re the gag reflex. I've now got to try and "desensitise" him by doing things like sticking my finger further into his mouth (lovely!!!) and I've starting giving him rusks, which he loves!!!

So feeding and the starting of solids has been made extra tricky in our family! Today he even threw up the little amount of food he swallowed! Hopefully he will get better soon!
