Hi all,
I'm in a contemplative mood atm moment....and I started thinking about Christmas lol. With only a few days left until the 25th December, Christmas Day, stores are increasing their bids to try and get you to do last minute shopping with them - whether it be to get that Christmas present for a family member you just remembered, or to get the final touches to make your Christmas Meal perfect, they're all fighting for your attention. To me, Christmas is more about spending quality time with family and remembering the reason for the season - the birth of Jesus - then about making sure the decorations, settings and food is perfect, or that I have bought that 'perfect' gift for that hard-to-buy someone, but this doesn't stop the different stores trying to tell you you need something extra to make that one day of the year perfect.
Whether or not you believe in Jesus, Christmas is a special time for millions of people around the world. Is it losing that special touch that comes with things not being perfect, but family just enjoying each other, and instead being replaced with an all-consuming, unquenchable "MUST HAVE" hunger which robs people of the peace and joy of Christmas and instead replaces it with worry, panic, stress, shopping-rage(when one is unable to get what they want, or because of the extra long cues), and an exhaustion that says "I can't wait 'til it's over!". Why do we do this to overselves? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the excitment that comes with Christmas, but like a lot of people this year, my Christmas budget is tight and there is alot of pressure out there to make Christmas "perfect". And because $$$ is tight we could not afford to buy presents for a lot of relatives this year, which can make you feel downright Horrible! What would happen if we spent one Christmas NOT worrying about presents, just making a basic meal that is shared by all, and resort to using the day to just enjoy the company of those who mean the most to us? |

Re: Has the meaning of Christmas been swallowed in commercialism?
Christmas is definitly too commercialized, and competitive. I hate that evry one seems so concerned about wether their gift cost as much as so and so's, and whether the turkey is bigger, or the tree has more lights on it.
I love walking around the streets at night with my family looking at the lights, and wishing their were carol singers around, with their hymns and candles. I love going to church and singing the Christmas hymns, and helping the church spread the good news.
I love having the bowl of treats on the table for anyone to dig into.
I love skipping our normal Bible reading and reading the Christmas story just for the children.
I love waiting expectantly for each meal that is different only because of what day it is, and eating way more than is comfortable, but keeping stubornly on because it tastes so darned good!
I love gathering round the tree and watching every ones faces as they open their presents, and even the clean up afterwards!
I even love having relatives around, though we live at the opposite end of the country to every one else, so its never a big turn out.
And I love the end of the day when we all kneel before bed time and thank the Good Lord for a safe and happy time!
I hope my Christmas never gets complicated like so many others seems to have done!

Re: Has the meaning of Christmas been swallowed in commercialism?
Pia, I sooo agree with you !!
To be honest, I'm not too excited about Christmas, because the whole commercialism thing has gotten to me..
I believe in caring about people all year around, and buying things for them because you care, not because you HAVE to..
And I think you're right, Christmas is about the birth of Jesus..
I am a pretty faithful Catholic, I may not go to Church, I may not agree with the whole bible; but everytime something goes RIGHT in my life (not just wrong), I thank God for all that he has given me..
God has blessed me with a lot, that is what I remember as Christmas approaches :)
For me and Lawrence, I would much rather that he bought me something I needed, than to go out and buy something random just for the sake of Christmas..
I know he loves me because of the things he does for me.. not because of the things he buys me..
I'm not someone who can have their love bought; so even if someone were to buy me gifts 365 days of the year, if they didn't respect me, then those gifts wouldn't mean a thing..
(I think it's a lot harder to love and appreciate someone, than it is to buy them gifts)
I do hope you enjoy the holiday season, because of Jesus and because of time with your family..
Because that's what I'll be enjoying :)
Love Thuy xoxoxoxoxo
