Has the meaning of Christmas been swallowed in commercialism?

Comment Published at 04:3604:3611 comments11 comments37 Visits37 VisitsReport

Hi all,

I'm in a contemplative mood atm moment....and I started thinking about Christmas lol. With only a few days left until the 25th December, Christmas Day, stores are increasing their bids to try and get you to do last minute shopping with them - whether it be to get that Christmas present for a family member you just remembered, or to get the final touches to make your Christmas Meal perfect, they're all fighting for your attention. To me, Christmas is more about spending quality time with family and remembering the reason for the season - the birth of Jesus - then about making sure the decorations, settings and food is perfect, or that I have bought that 'perfect' gift for that hard-to-buy someone, but this doesn't stop the different stores trying to tell you you need something extra to make that one day of the year perfect.

Whether or not you believe in Jesus, Christmas is a special time for millions of people around the world. Is it losing that special touch that comes with things not being perfect, but family just enjoying each other, and instead being replaced with an all-consuming, unquenchable "MUST HAVE" hunger which robs people of the peace and joy of Christmas and instead replaces it with worry, panic, stress, shopping-rage(when one is unable to get what they want, or because of the extra long cues), and an exhaustion that says "I can't wait 'til it's over!". Why do we do this to overselves? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the excitment that comes with Christmas, but like a lot of people this year, my Christmas budget is tight and there is alot of pressure out there to make Christmas "perfect". And because $$$ is tight we could not afford to buy presents for a lot of relatives this year, which can make you feel downright Horrible! What would happen if we spent one Christmas NOT worrying about presents, just making a basic meal that is shared by all, and resort to using the day to just enjoy the company of those who mean the most to us?

Re: Has the meaning of Christmas been swallowed in commercialism?

Christmas is definitly too commercialized, and competitive. I hate that evry one seems so concerned about wether their gift cost as much as so and so's, and whether the turkey is bigger, or the tree has more lights on it.

I love walking around the streets at night with my family looking at the lights, and wishing their were carol singers around, with their hymns and candles. I love going to church and singing the Christmas hymns, and helping the church spread the good news.

I love having the bowl of treats on the table for anyone to dig into.

I love skipping our normal Bible reading and reading the Christmas story just for the children.

I love waiting expectantly for each meal that is different only because of what day it is, and eating way more than is comfortable, but keeping stubornly on because it tastes so darned good!

I love gathering round the tree and watching every ones faces as they open their presents, and even the clean up afterwards!

I even love having relatives around, though we live at the opposite end of the country to every one else, so its never a big turn out.

And I love the end of the day when we all kneel before bed time and thank the Good Lord for a safe and happy time!

I hope my Christmas never gets complicated like so many others seems to have done!

Thanks for bringing this thought to our attention as I know there are lots of us who love Jesus . Without Jesus there would be no Christmas. We love Christmas and this morning my husband took the morning service at our church and reminded us once again of that very first Christmas

Love Pauline

Re: Has the meaning of Christmas been swallowed in commercialism?

this is what I want to teach my kids.

Christmas is about either your religious reason ie birth of christ or the pagan tradition ( I am unsure of the rest as I have only been involved in pagan and christian)

It should be about family and wanting to be apart of a family weather it is friend family or real family. it should be fun and not "oh bum I have to deal with my Sil Bec who shits me." presents are a comercial thing and I hate being told I should have to buy for this person and that person and some random guy who I have never met and proberly next year will be a memory.

This year all I have bought for is the "I have to, to aplease the family BS (secret santa x 4 $10gifts + 2 secret santa $25 = my 3 neices and nephew)" for my kids and for my friends 2 kids. I dont buy xmas for Chris and he dont buy xmas for me. I think if u wanna buy then do it for kids not adults.

this year I am looking forward to Boxing Day. Time with friends and water fights. :) Having fun. thats what it should be.

Have a great Christmas Pia, Brandon, Aalyiah and Krystana.

Pia, I sooo agree with you !!

To be honest, I'm not too excited about Christmas, because the whole commercialism thing has gotten to me..
I believe in caring about people all year around, and buying things for them because you care, not because you HAVE to..

And I think you're right, Christmas is about the birth of Jesus..
I am a pretty faithful Catholic, I may not go to Church, I may not agree with the whole bible; but everytime something goes RIGHT in my life (not just wrong), I thank God for all that he has given me..
God has blessed me with a lot, that is what I remember as Christmas approaches :)

For me and Lawrence, I would much rather that he bought me something I needed, than to go out and buy something random just for the sake of Christmas..
I know he loves me because of the things he does for me.. not because of the things he buys me..

I'm not someone who can have their love bought; so even if someone were to buy me gifts 365 days of the year, if they didn't respect me, then those gifts wouldn't mean a thing..
(I think it's a lot harder to love and appreciate someone, than it is to buy them gifts)

I do hope you enjoy the holiday season, because of Jesus and because of time with your family..
Because that's what I'll be enjoying :)

Love Thuy xoxoxoxoxo

So true Thuy :) - I would much rather spend intimate, quality time with my family than have the latest or most expensive thing any day! They say Diamonds are a girl's best friend - I say "Phooey!" Not this girl! Gimme an intimate night with my Husband and my kids anyday!

Aww I agree !!!!

LOL Phooey.. gotta use that word now. hahaha

But yeah, I'd much rather live in a cardboard box and have my family..
Than to be rich and have nobody :)

And plus, I don't care too much about diamonds.. LOL
I'd sell them off and buy some Dawson's Creek DVDs.. hahahahahahahaha
(I just finished Season 3... LOL)

Glad you liked the word Phooey lol.

As you can tell I'm not much of a diamond person either lol - I'd keep them if someone close bought them for me, because they bought them and not because they're diamonds lol. I say "Go the DVD's!" (though I wasn't much of a Dawson's Creek fan lol - I'm a kiddies shows fanatic  )
