Baby & pram parking

Comment Published at 22:5222:527 comments7 comments110 Visits110 VisitsReport

I think it is great that there are now special packing spots for parents with prams. This was not the case in the early 90s when I had four children under the age of 4. Shopping centre parking was quite dangerous as one only has 2 hands you cannot push a pram and hold hands of all the walking ones at once. Luckily my kids were pretty good and didn't tend too run off. Also there were no double shopping trolleys for twins. I rarely went to the shops with all four kids by myself but I can tell many a tale of the frustration of having 4 small kids and trying to do everyday activities, that parents of 2 could do with out much trouble.

The other day I went to my local shopping centre and there is now a whole row of parking for parents with prams. About 18 were unoccupied. I had to park right at the other end of the car park whilst all these special spots are unoccupied. When I take my elderly mother to the shops all the Acrod spots are often taken but there is an over abundance of these parent and pram parking. Once I passed one of these and did not notice that it was a parent and pram one so I backed into it ( An honest mistake). I was quite proud of my clever parking. As I walked to the shops some loud mouth young woman was yelling in my general direction "Where's you baby?" As I was unaware that I had backed into the pram parking bay  ( They were new) I was wondering what she was going on about and presumed she was yelling at someone else. When I got back to the car and drove out I then glanced in the rear view mirror and realised that I had taken one of these bays.

I did feel a bit guilty, however after all the frustration I experienced all those years ago of being a mum of 4 kids , my eldest still being 3 when the  (unplanned) baby arrived, I may have given the brash young mum a tongue lashing before she headed off to waste the baby bonus. Of course another little luxury not available to parents in the 80s & 90s.

Re: Baby & pram parking

Sooo?? Are you glad they are there for the convenience of mothers with babies? Or are you unhappy because there aren't enough disabled parking spaces?

I live in a country town thou, and i can tell you that there is only 1 shopping complex that has pram parking spaces and at that complex there are only 5 spaces. But there are thousands of mothers with children... There are disabled parking spaces every 15 mtrs... I realise that it is only a new thing having pram spaces, but i think the more the better. I find it incredibly difficult sometimes, especially when the parking spaces are that close together that you have to walk sideways just to get past the cars. I am constantly worried about hitting the car next to me when i am getting my son out.

So yeah, i get angry when i see people without children parking in those spaces. Just the same as you would get angry if someone was parking in the disabled spots when they shouldn't be.

Re: Baby & pram parking

I guess society is finally evolving back to the sensible days in caves when mothers were revered for their ability to give life and supported by the community at large.  Wider parking, closer to the store in safe areas is one of the few luxuries that modern society accords to parents.   The difference with the elderly and children is that you can drop an elderly person close to the entrance and they will be reasonably safe while you park and walk back to meet them; with kids it is a little more dangerous for various reasons.  Be happy that your children and their children will find life less frustrating in this small way.

There are disabled parking spots for anyone who requires them and if you are driving someone who is disabled regularly you could speak to a medical professional and the RTA about getting a permit, this often includes ederly people with limited mobility.

Re: Baby & pram parking

Most of the shopping centers in Perth have them as well.  I love them.  I think it is great because you know there is no need to rush to get your kid and all of your belongings into the car while some inpatient person without kids waits annoyingly glaring at you.  And like Angie said, you can open the doors wide enough.  Frankly I get annoyed at people who park there who have no kids.  Even the elderly.  They think that they should be able to do what ever they want cuz they are elderly.  Not just in parking lots but stores as well.  Irritates me!

You ought to call your local council or the mall and request parking for the elderly near the door.

If i see someone parking in the pram park and they dont have a pram / baby i will tell them off for it! like domestic warrior said, if it were a disabled park people wouldnt think twice about telling u off!

I love the pram parking, not cos it close but they are bigger which means i can open the doors fully when taking the baby out of the car without dinging some elses car door!

Wow, 18 in a row, it must be a huge shopping centre!!  It is a shame that you didn't have them around in your day with your kids, because even a couple of kids when tired and whingey can be a handful let alone four!!  I have seen childless people parking in these spots and it does irk me, if it was a Disabled Parking spot people would be up in arms about someone parking there!!  It is annoying if you have to park miles away, but think of the incidental exercise you are getting by walking that extra mintue to the Mall door!!!

Re: Baby & pram parking

I know the spots are needed. I'm just sometimes peeved because I needed them more than most, and they weren't available then. I'm sure I'll benefit from them as a grandparent!!  Hopefully my kids will take family planning a little more seriously!

I lobbied Woolies for the Twin Trolleys but didn't think too suggest baby & pram parking. Of course neither came into fruition until my brood were at school! Now there are so many at my local shopping centre  (Whitfords) that it is ridiculous. Many on the upstairs  baby car bays  are unoccupied everytime I go to the shops.

My mum already has an Acrod parking permit however the disabled parking bays are often taken when I take her to the shops. We have to park a long way away leaving many closer baby and pram vacant spots  in between. That's my gripe. I'm sure if I lobby the centre they will rectify the problem or maybe Acrod permit holders are allowed to park in the Baby and pram ones if all the Acrod bays are taken.

I believe that there is no  fine for parking in the baby with pram bays ( without a baby) but there is $1000  fine incurred if a non permit holder parks in a registered Acrod only bay.
