Me and My Family

Hi Everyone, I'm Kym and my husband and I have a darling little boy named Mikey who will be 3 this September.  We are new parents and have no idea what the norm is for a child of his age.  We are very concerned that he may be autistic because he is showing signs of autisim but the occupational therapist can't determine if he is yet.

He shows signs of speech delay but knows the alphabet, numbers, colours and the names of most animals.  He is beginning to mimic words but doesn't use them in his everyday jibberish when he talks to himself.  Hes fasinated with the counting of his fingers and likes to line things up....which is an autistic trait.

We thought he had a hearing problem because when we use to call his name he would never come. The audioligist said he has normal hearing...so he must be hard headed. hmmm well, thats getting better now but he still has an attention problem and likes to just gaize at times at things like hes daydreaming and I have to call his name repeatedly to get back his attention.

We would love to hear from parents of  toddlers who may have experienced and noticed these traits with their own children.

Overwhelmed with anxiety!

Talking with the Cousins

Comment Published at 15:1115:114 comments4 comments30 Visits30 VisitsReport

Another breakthrough!  Yesterday afternoon my youngest cousins who are 6 and 8 came over and made quite an impression on my 3 year old son Mikey.  They were all playing with playdough and Mikey started to repeat the words that the boys were saying.  It was fabulous! I don't think he knew what they were talking about but just the mere fact that he was talking makes me so hopeful.  He is a shy child though and it takes some time for him to warm up to faces that he hasn't seen for awhile.  I don't know if that is normal?  Mikey has not had much exposure to kids of his own age since we have been on holidays for 3 months and back home he hasn't had much exposure either.  When we get back we will be enrolling him into a playgroup again.

The joy of jelly beans

Comment Published at 02:0302:036 comments6 comments34 Visits34 VisitsReport

Today was a shock for me. My nearly 3 year old has speech delay till now  just to let u know and we weregrocery shopping in woolies and I was giving him jelly beans and to my surprise he started saying the colours of each jelly bean he was eating.  I was over joyed!  And tonight he was in the highchair and I have been teaching him for about a week the word 'out' and he never says it himself without me saying it first.  When I went out of the room to get something I could hear him say outloud 'get out'! Wow, another progressive step forward. I'm so excited. All the support from all the parents on here makes me feel so hopeful.

Went to the Pediatrician Yesterday to get his diagnosis...Grim response

Comment Published at 15:0315:035 comments5 comments42 Visits42 VisitsReport

I feel so depressed and stressed out. Mikey got an appointment with a Pedia, bad timing though since he was asleep for most of the evaluation.  The pedia ask me questions about Mikeys development and I wanted to know exactly what could be the cause for his speech delay.   He told me to prepare for the worst for it could be the signs of autisim.  I told him that he progressed and started to open up to talking since I've been with him more now that Im on holidays and not working.  He doesn't have exposure to kids much and he stays with the Nanny most of the time in the Philippines.  He said that his infatuation with numbers is a sign that he might be heading down the road to autisim.  He isn't and affectionate child but will cuddle and kiss us if we ask him to.  He follows instruction but just cant talk. I'm thinking of other factors that may be a cause to his delay besides autisim? The Dr. said a change in lifestyle within the next 6 to 12 months will determine whether or not he fits under the autistic spectrum.  Just hearing that from him made me want to burst out into tears...but I didn't. I held it in. I'm planning on quiting work and concentrate on his development.  Thats all I can do for now.
