What was moving like with kids?

Comment Published at 05:3505:3513 comments13 comments360 Visits360 VisitsReport
What was it like? Moved on Monday and Tuesday, that was fine. - Except the street light outside Codi's room never turns off. So I figured that out when Codi bare slept an hour that night, until I blocked out the windows and doors at 4 in the morning with blackcard board. I had to do this the next night, as I found more light shining in. - Monday and Tuesday I only had about 3 hours sleep, but was powering away on the energy of moving in. Codi was at daycare those two days, as well as transitioning into from the baby's room into the toddler's room, and his daddy away in the US, he was a little beside himself. On the Monday, he had a tantrum at daycare and banged his forehead, getting a bruise. Since his daddie left for the US, he has had a tantrum every day until this Saturday. My goodness, Saturday morning I was fixing his black cardboard in his room, without getting his milk first (usually he doesn't mind me doing something before hand) this time no. The biggest tantrum I've had, he was head butting himself into the floor. So, I put him in his cott and went and got his milk. The rest of the day I really then focused on routine and we had lots of visitors and his friend over. It ended up being the best day and we are back into home life now and he is back to normal, no tantrums. He is also sleeping better (and so am I) and gobbling up his food. I think he is so happy now, because I am not always on the phone and letting all sorts of delivery people and fix-it people here to the house.

Capers in the house...(a newly built house)
- The piping that the washing machine connects to, to get water needed to be fixed as water sprayed out everywhere. (Finally got fixed on Saturday afternoon)
- Hot water to bathroom that Codi uses was just trickling out. (Fixed on Sat)
- The aircon needs to get a motor part replaced, not sending air into the family room. So have had to set up the heaters in the family room. (Codi's getting a chest cough, so trying to keep him really rugged up.
- The never used dishwasher is not working, with a fault sign coming up
- The microwave is making a grunting noise.

Other than that it's starting to feel like home!!!

We're just starting this process UGH!
We are just beginning to pack for our move on August 4th. Then we are in a rental home until we close on our house on October 9th. Any advice for us as we set about doing this as smoothly as possible?

Oh my

Oh no, it don't sound like you had a great time.

Whats the saying, Murphys Law, anything that could go wrong, goes wrong.

I feel so bad for you. It sucks that all of that happened, expecially in a newly built house.

I wish you all of luck with your new house and hope that nothing else happenes :)

Head smashing

My son from before he was a year to about 17 months would smash his head off of everything when he got mad.  I ask my doctor about it and she said it is quit common and he should grow out of it. He hasn't done it in a while.

Head smashing
thank goodness, I was beginning to think the worse. I also read all the temper tantrums artricles on Minti, for help with my sanity. They are amazing occurances - I can feel it sometimes, it's like a hurricane. I think I experienced the worse category 9. Hopefully, we are in clear calm waters frm now on...learning to spot the tiniest of triggers. Basically, he is so much better with mom focusing on him. The head smashing thing really creeps up on you when its the first time.

thanks so much, it really helps to get such great support from Minti friends xx

Head smashing
that's good to hear - thanks for sharing.
we have started to let codi know that it is not good for him to bang his head, and we are also trying to anticipate it.
He hasn't done it for a few days now... we are also starting to suspect that it has to do with him not feeling well. he has the flu and a sore throat (which is stopping him from eating) and probably a headache... lots to get frustrated by, I may bang my head when I get to that stage too ;)

Moving house

We were forced to move house when I was pregnant with my second child. It was very exhausting. I had a toddler to care for and I was due to have a baby and I could barely move. I had to sit down and pack for a couple of hours then rest for a few hours. i am not looking forward to moving again as the more children you have it seems the more junk you accumulate.

oh dear... I don't know how I would have faired being pregnant too. The things us moms cope with is amazing to me. Thanks for sharing your experience...there were times I felt so beside myself and it is so reassuring to hear from other moms.

the junk! isn't it amazing.... i think every time we move we throw away a mini skip bin worth of junk.
we also try give as much to the salvo's as possible, as one persons junk is another's treasure.

What was moving like with kids?

You would think that moving to a new house would be problem free, but alas it's not. My husband and I moved to our house on Oct. 04 when I was 4 months pregnant and quickly found several problems; one faucet outside the house only had hot water (I don't know that it would be good to water the lawn with scalding hot water) and the faucet in the garage wouldn't work.  Then a couple of days after we found out after being gone from the house for a couple of hours later that the weather stripping (to keep the seal and separate indoors from outdoors) in one side of the door was missing. There were thousands of lady bugs on the ceiling and around the doors and windows! Yuck! Anyway, they were easily fixed thank goodness.

Codi sounds like he's adjusting slowly but surely though! I hope you guys settle in quickly.

...things are finally becoming more smoother (until I have to shoot off to the US) oh well it's character building for the little man. My goodness, Izzy you've had the works. You know I didn't realize just how much we moms/mums take on (till after I do it and read about it). It's challenging moving with a toddler. Thanks so much Izzy, I didn't realise just what making a home a home, until I had to do it with a family...I feel like I am not alone in this experience...it's hard to explain to others without them actually having kids themselves what it's like. So missed Minti - thank god we won't be moving for AGES!!!

PS. Getting better too!

You guys have familly close by, right? I hope you're getting some help.

I wish I can say that we're not going to move for ages, but alas, I can't.  The industry where my husband is in is very fickle. Companies take over companies and then changes bring bad news sometimes (layoffs). Thankfully, my husband has never been laid off. All our move have been by choice so all the move has had financial sense .. anyway, I have put in a request that we should stick here where we are for a LONG time (at the very least, longer than 5 years).  I'd hate to experience how hellish life would be moving with a toddler.

I'm glad you're feeling better!
