My reading to my son pledge

Comment Published at 04:4104:418 comments8 comments204 Visits204 VisitsReport
Having just read this new Minti article, "The Need to Read", I have decided to make a pledge and spend 20 mins with my two year old a day, to read books to him out loud...and like kseers says in her article "Read with animation – make silly voices, act out the story, ask questions and let the story come alive.  Try playing eye spy with the pictures in the book.  Get your child to tell you what they think should happen next.  It should be a joyful experience – not a chore."

Will see how I go with my pledge

Books
We go to a literacy based Playgroup, and you would be surprised at how many children don't even OWN a book!

Love the sound effects
I tell you Kids love sound effects. We do all the time whenever read the book for our children. Different character got different voices. Good luck. Make reading even more fun!!

Great idea
Now all mine are at school, we have 'reading time' in the evening where the boys read out loud to me and each other and then I read to them.
Since our daughter was born 13 years ago I have read to my kids and it is a lovely time and certainly encourages literacy i believe.

Does anyone else have trouble with yawning though? I must have terrible breathing control when reading out loud as I always end up YAWNING.........

Great idea
I get the yawns when I start reading at night.
I get my 6yo to do his reading in the morning as he is fresher and does a better job of working out his words.
At night we tend to read fun books and even use books that read to us from CD's etc.

Good for you!
What a great pledge, Rachel!  I was once told by a reading specialist that reading to your child every day for fifteen minutes every day for the first three years is the equivalent of one year of school!  What an edge you will be giving Codi as well as long lasting memories :)

Going to do it too Rachel!!

I am going to do that too I think.. It sounds like tons of fun.. Even though she's almost 9 months old.. Ahh well LOL!..

She has this one book. Called MOO, BAA, LA LA LA! By Sandra Boynton and she just loves it.. Everyday that I read her it, she laughs at it, its rather cute to see.. (actually I read it to her more than once a day)

Reading Pledge
Good on you Rachel.
Reading is so much fun when you get into the character. My favourites include the Hairy McClairy books.
Try and read like they do on playschool, thats also fun.
When my eldest was two I had to make up a story every night for him because he said they were better than the books.
