Reading books

by rachelcookComment Published at 15:4215:420 comments0 comments39 Visits39 VisitsReport
I feel like the best mom today. When your little one starts to get more involved in books, it really is satisfying. You find yourself having fun and getting into the story. Although I am finding that our little one is really into the Hairy Mclary Books, which is really great as they are very easy to read and have fun stories.

It has been an interesting first day at this Start Up seminar...with VC's getting up and talking. Some good advice for tech entrepreneurs and I am starting to see familiar faces in the audience.

Time for lunch...will blog more after.

Budding in Silicon Valley

by rachelcookComment Published at 16:2416:240 comments0 comments44 Visits44 VisitsReport
Hope you are all having a great day!

Well alls budding over here in Silicon Valley. Family is doing well and we are all smiles. We move into a proper house with a yard in two weeks can't wait. Our little one is settling in well and growing up. He has this little kids computer and after three weeks of challenging all the levels, he can get through all the alphabet letters levels from 1-6. Especially when the reward after each level is a big smiling happy sun which is his ultimate favorite.

Tonight we are off to a Stirr Mixer (a tech founders party) just near Stanford and we will be witness to some demo's of some new start ups, with CNet hosting. Pretty cool.

Last night we were at Stanford's VLab (venture lab) in association with MIT. Powerset are aiming to topple google with their secret, natural language processing search engine they will unveil later on this year. WIth all the same start up strappings as google, it will be interesting to see what this is like to search using natural language. Pretty cool to here direct from the CEO and founder.

Allergic reactions to Amoxillician or pencilian based antibiotics

by rachelcookComment Published at 14:0514:053 comments3 comments1823 Visits1823 VisitsReport
Keep aware parents, if your child is given antibiotics...the reaction maybe subtle to start with, as in my case with our little one...and I only noticed a slight reaction when I gave it to him once before and thought nothing of it (ie. woke up once really upset, as a 12 month old)...but this time round he is much older, it was severe, not life threatening, but worrying. So we are off to the doctors to be examined and hopefully put on alternative antibiotics. Symptoms were feeling like his body was itchey, very unsettled, continual crying, waking up screaming like a night terror, a very big rash on his face that seems to flare up, sensitivity to heat and generally very unsettled a short time after taking the amoxicillian. I have read thought that most children grow out of this reaction to this antibiotic as they get older. However, children susceptible to ezcema and allergies are most likely to have a reaction. Best to let your doctor know that they have allergies and ask what symptoms to watch for if you see a considerable change in your child's behavior after giving them the drug.

I gave our little one a anti-histamine, but I am booked in to see the Doc, as I know he still needs to finish his course of antibiotics and to switch to a non-allergic drug as strep throat/scarlet fever can become life threatening if they don't complete their course of antibiotic.

Keep in contact with your doctor if anything worries you. I am seeing our doctor before I have to give him his next amoxillcian dose and I don't want to give him it again, but give him a different version...poor thing I get sooo worried seeing his body react to the drug and giving him an anti-histamine on top of that is something I am not comfortable with doing..

I hope this helps...

UPDATE:

Saw pediatrician and he has been switch to a antibiotic that doesn't make him allergic...all is so much better!!!

Folic Acid what all mothers and women need to KNOW

by rachelcookComment Published at 21:0921:093 comments3 comments131 Visits131 VisitsReport
All women are told to take folic acid before you want to try to conceive. At least three months before. We all know the reasons why and there is a lot of information out there spruking why. But most of us don't know that the folic acid we are taking is only made for 70% of the population. WHAT? I know, it is a false sense of security that 30% of folic acid takers for pregnancy cannot metabolize the form of folic acid you buy in the shops. Well, I found out just by chance, that I am 10% of the 30% that can't metabolize folic acid at all from tablets nor much from food. Not only does folic acid help with weight issues it also prevents major disabilities like spina bifida to name one in unborn children.

So imagine to my shock when I was told this. I was also told that I was very lucky to have our son...I was taking a lot of folic acid from a range of tablets more than I was advised to take and was going against Dr's advice. I am so grateful I did...because I realize now when we began to start trying to our second. I thought I think I should follow the advice this time and maybe not take the tablets, just the pregnancy ones you get at the chemist.

Well, I found out (after two miscarriages) that not taking large doses of folic acid is better than taking none at least I am getting a little...and if I didn't solve this...I would miscarry many times before having a child. And who's to stay that child would come out okay.

So, after I mentally hugged my fertility natropath about ten million times....she gave me the form of folic acid I needed to buy (from NZ) and is available in the US...that is specially created in the form that my body can metabolize completely...

WOO HOOO

I can't believe it. I can't believe I was given an answer. I feel blessed and not depressed that I would only be a mom of one :0) although I could live with that, our little one is magical.

I just wanted to let mothers know out there and women trying to get pregnant to request from their specialist to be tested for folic acid metabolism ability if you are experiencing problems and miscarrying. I am not saying that it may only be the problem, but it may help solve problems one step at a time...

As they also detected that my iron levels were really low as well.

I really believe women need to take control of their body's chemistry, metabolism...I truly believe this accounts for many aliments like tireness, hormone imbalance and effects from taking the contraceptive pill like me that starves your body of nutrients. Working on getting you body back to optimal health with the right nutrients and minerals makes for better natural babies and the The Natural Fertility Centre in Sydney is amazing.

I use someone in Perth, who worked at this center.

I plan to source the right folic acid here...will provide details when I find it.

At the moment I am taking the high does of folic acid.

So I plan to get myself tested again after 4-6months and then start trying. I am still also charting so my natural fertility management natropath can see if there is anything else. I am also taking other supplements that she has given me and I am really starting to feel so great and hardly ever tired or runned down no matter how much I push the hours awake.

Something to think about. I think all mothers need a personal natropath.

Update in Silicon Valley

by rachelcookComment Published at 15:5115:512 comments2 comments65 Visits65 VisitsReport
Well hello everyone,

We are settling in well here in the Bay Area. We are near Stanford University and we are soooo stoked we can free wifi in so many cool cafe's.

Codi has been loving family home daycare and we have also found a wonderful nanny for when I attend conferences. He is so happy and I rarely see him stressed from being away from me...this week was the first time he spent four days at family daycare and despite pangs in my heart it all went so well, he loved it so much that he didn't want to go home it was all very stimulating.

I have managed to organise my workload and started formalising what I see I need to do in my role. We have been getting such a buzz by being here..but I am sitting in the living room and its all quiet. Why?

Codi got "strep throat" and I think Clay's got it too, so both boys are asleep after filling themselves with soup.

I had no idea what strep throat was really so I have asked it on Q+A and also found an article here, but I want to here about actual experiences, I learn better from those...so feel free to comment.

One thing I have learnt from reading the expert article is that we all need to go to the doctors and see if it is and get antibiotics. Next thing to do after this post.

I have also been setting up my virtual workspace on this awesome program that was demo'd the other night at a San Francisco New Tech Meetup with one of the Co-founders of Meetup hosting the event.

http://www.collanos.com

It allows you to collaborate on documents and project perfects for remote users to stay connected, users have to install but its worth it....oh pause...I have forgotten to let everyone know - I am back to work now...although I never really think I did stop work, more like tone down the amount of hours I worked, but I am getting more out there and looking to set up meetups, network or speak. Most of my work is analysis of market trends, new tech and promoting Minti, Vibe and ineedhits....

Codi starts preschool in the new year which is the 1st of September...and I am working on getting the admissions forms in to two schools I have taken a liking too.

We really didn't get the chance to do a proper farewell, but we saw as many of you as we could to say goodbye for a little while. After two weeks we knew straight away that we needed to be here for a year....I think if you really are passionate about something, you are most happy being in that environment.

I can't wait to move into our home at the end of this month.

The best thing is that we have access to technology to keep in touch in so many ways, like connecting on video skype with the family...only the other day I was talking to my father in law going through the GPS and it only felt like he was round the corner. We do miss Mum cook terribly and we think of her and send her lots of positive karma!!! We hope to see family over here in the spring break which would be the BEST. My mom is coming over mid april and that will be a blast she can connect up with soo many relatives here to keep her so busy.

Family is important and when your far away, it's even more so...and very special when we meetup....
