A New Mum's Dilemma - Formula A or Formula B

This post is from from my other blog here

So you’re getting ready to have a baby. Congratulations! Now here comes the hard part. You need to decide what to feed your baby. If you have the choice, would you prefer to feed your newborn formula that is just satisfactory? Or would you prefer to give her premium formula that offers a host of health benefits for both your baby and you?

Let’s do a quick and easy breakdown of the two formula types.

Formula A, the satisfactory food, requires a lot of work. You have to measure formula, mix it with the right amount of water, and warm it just right. You have to burp your baby frequently during feedings (have that burp cloth handy), clean bottles a lot, and be very careful not to leave it out for long. When you leave the house, you have to be sure you have enough on hand. One benefit is that your baby will sleep for longer stretches of time.

Re: A New Mum's Dilemma - Formula A or Formula B

Good article, agree right up to and before the last two paragraphs. In your last two paragraphs you are making the assumption that formula is a designer product? I believe like you that breast milk is the best choice when available however your link between formula and ‘many of those same people’ has me completely lost in finding the correct premise to fit in between. What can that link be? Its got me puzzled??

You state ‘many of those same people’, who are the ‘many’. Sound like the us and them mentality without defining who ‘them’ really are. You define ‘them’ as the latte set, sounds like reverse elitism to me……..

Woman in Africa who depend on formula drop offs by the United Nations are not your typical latte set. My best friend who is a social worker with FAYS in my state gives out s26 gold formula to clients as recommended by doctors based on scientific research. Designer decisions? Me thinks not.........

I believe when it comes to choosing the correct formula woman/men of all backgrounds in whatever income brackets they may be in will make an informed choice based on the research available and if it is outside what they can afford/or need they will go for an alternative in the same way you go from FB to FA. Nevertheless the childs needs are the important factor here and what people do outside this choice in there every day life I believe falls short in the link between formula and the so called ‘them’/designer products.

im sorry but  finally have to disagree with you!lol

Your writings are great and I will continue in reading !! blog on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First - you may disagree with me all you like - in fact I encourage it.

Secondly - I think the point being made is that often breast milk is not being treated as a premium product. It's free - take it or leave it - we often place more value on premium coffee etc.

It's a personal choice. What I would rather see is more support given to mothers no matter what their choice - it is their choice and they make that choice for a variety of reasons. I cannot help but think though if breast milk was considered a premium product - more of it would be used.

I wonder, if we bottled it, put a premium label on it and put it on a supermarket shelf - would more mothers use it.

Re: A New Mum's Dilemma - Formula A or Formula B

but isnt breast milk the premium product?? yes you can argue otherwise and argue well however science replicating nature would fall short of the premium product.

personally i havent been around people or information that would not accept this as the premium product whereas you seem to have been in circles were this has been mentioned. hence it is clearer where you are coming from now.

if you bottle breastmilk it would become denatured therefore the term premium would be made redundant. so fresh is best and = premium  lol

in an age when we are eating more and more processed foods, when apples and oranges etc are 6 months old and sold as fresh(wonder what the vitamin content would be) when meat is pumped full of hormones and the list could go on, would breast milk  be considered premium? what role does the body play in overcoming the lack of nutrition?does bad food habits or lack of good food contribute to a boderline product? personally they are just thoughts and have not read any scientific research into these areas however if you have any thoughts i would be interested to learn more

cheers rue

on the topic of premium coffee

I think somehow we are arguing the same point but from different directions. I totally agree that breast is best and fresh is best and that the premium milk is fresh breast (sounds good coming from a male - but then again (lol))

The point I guess I am making is that sometimes mother's themselves don't put the premium tag on it and jump straight into formula without at least attempting breast feeding.

I know there are many woment who cannot breast feed and my criticism is not directed towards them - but I have met many women who wont breast feed for reasons as simple as not wanting saggy boobs. I mean c'mon.

I'm going to butt in and say that Les is a male, of course he is going to think breast is best.  If he had his way, I'd be breastfeeding him!

I tried to breastfeed with each of our girls, with mixed success, and think there are benefits in both, as does Les (just ask him! any excuse to take my baby off me).

Breastfeeding is an art, and it does take a lot of work.  I've tried with my last four, with mixed success, and am hoping that this next one will reach the 12 months mark.  The convenience of breastmilk is great, and there is very little work involved.  Sure, you feed more often, but it also means more time with your feet up!
