I read an article on that... said the poor things were still alive being dragged up the ramp with their guts hanging out!

While I think that whaling is just like any other fishing industry, I believe that it has to be sustainable, that is protect the breeding populations.  This picture shows a mother and her calf, slaughtered in the name of research.  90% of the information we need of any species can be gained from blood samples.  The other 10% is to do with their physical structure.  The Japanese are hunting 1000 whales this year, in the name of science, and are killing endangered species and breaching the laws of fishing/ whaling in Australian waters.
