More on the Walk

Comment Published at 17:3217:320 comments0 comments50 Visits50 VisitsReport

I'm really pleased to say that the founders of Minti are supporting this cause - see Clay's comments here

We are making great progress towards our goal - over 10% of the way there already, and still over 6 weeks to go !

PS Here's a little more info on my involvement ...

  • My son Matt who is just about to turn 5, was diagnosed with Juvenile (Type 1) Diabetes at 22 months - our family has no previous history of diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2)
  • Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease and affects over 150,000 Australians
  • These brave kids (and adults) are insulin-dependent and must take 3-4 (or more) injections of insulin (or, be permanently connected to an insulin pump), each day, just to stay alive
  • A further 1m+ Australians have Type 2 (adult onset) Diabetes which can in most cases be controlled by modifying diet and lifestyle
  • In Australia, for every $1 spent on research for finding a cure for diabetes (~$35m pa), a further $140 is spent on treating its impact (estimated at ~$5bn pa)
  • Complications associated with diabetes can be severe and include heart, eye, kidney and nerve disease, and the statistics are quite frightening: people with diabetes are 5 times more likely to have heart disease, 3 times more likely to suffer a stroke, 4 times more likely to have kidney disease, 5 times more likely to become blind, 6 times more likely to have cataracts and 4 times more likely to have glaucoma; every sufferer of Type 1 is likely to develop retinopathy (retina disease) after 20 years; type 1 diabetes shortens life expectancy by, on average, 15 years
  • Over 95% of JDRF funds raised go to medical research
  • Recently, JDRF was awarded the prestigious Givewell Best Practice Charity Award, selected from over 1,600 Australian charities, for such attributes as excellence in accountability and good management

JDRF and the Walk for a Cure, October 15th, 2006

Comment Published at 07:2107:210 comments0 comments26 Visits26 VisitsReport

As I mentioned earlier, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation conducts an annual Walk for a Cure event, throughout Australia and in many other courntries too.

This year, our team, The Matt Pack, is walking and has set an ambitious target.  Have a look at http://walk.jdrf.org.au/New South Wales/The Matt Pack/ for more details, and it you want to sponsor me or Matt, please feel free to do so

Walk to Cure Diabetes

Comment Published at 06:3306:332 comments2 comments199 Visits199 VisitsReport

Tomorrow, we're off with 200 other families for the launch event (in Sydney) for this year's Walk to Cure Diabetes, which is held annually, in every major city in Australia, in October.

http://www.jdrf.org.au/walk/

The launch is happening at Taronga Zoo, and the little ones are excited and looking forward to seeing the animals.

The Walk is JDRF's largest fundraiser every year, and we try to raise over $2m across Australia - more as we get closer to the day!

This is Matt - he was diagnosed with Type 1 at the age of 22months.  He has this insidious disease for life unless we can find a cure (oh - and that's me with him)

What a great site - congratulations to the Minti team

I have four young children, less than 4 years apart - a girl, identical twin boys, and a girl.  One of my sons suffers from Type 1 (Juvenile) Diabetes, and I hope to be able to contribute some thoughts on that subject to the Minti community when appropriate.

Cheers
