PerthNorg: The Citizen News ORGanisation

This post is from from my other blog here

Mr Barren is always talking about localisation, recently launching his localised search engine called Gnoos, so he’ll be happy to see a community web service that was just launched in Perth.

PerthNorg is Western Australia’s salvation. For too long we’ve been in the dark, because the local monopolistic newspaper has been dragging its clumsy feet when it has come to the Internet: for too long we’ve not had easy access to local news.

PerthNorg solves that problem in a big way. In fact it offers almost complete freedom because the news is up to us.

PerthNorg is a user empowered news site that gives citizen journalists (you!) editorial control. Every news item on PerthNorg is a submission from the Norg community by either creating it, sourcing it, ranking or commenting on it.

I’m a big fan, and I’d like to congratulate Bronwen on the launch!

If you’re a Perthite, bookmark the site and get in there and start helping with the news.

While at BloggerCon I snapped this photo. Kevin Marks multitasking: messaging on his Sidekick, chatting in the IRC backchannel on his laptop, and live streaming video from his digital camera (plugged in to the laptop, and streaming across the wifi).

The Podcast Network Auctions Advertising Slots

This post is from from my other blog here

Cameron, the CEO of The Podcast Network, has announced a series of eBay auctions for advertising slots on G’Day World.

This is great in so many ways, but mostly because it’s testing the water that only a few have tried before. Sun Microsystems, my former employer, even sells product via eBay. The concept is that it provides a product at the true market value. If there is a good enough demand, then the price rises, if not it stays low.

As a co-host on G’Day World I’d love to see people help out in anyway they can. Either throw a bid in–the starting price of $250 is such a bargain–or promote in anyway you can.

BarCamp Perth

Chris Messina, one of the folk that started BarCamp a year ago, pinged me this morning. When we met at BarCamp San Francisco I mentioned an interest in helping with a BarCamp. He was keen for me to work it in to the BarCamp Earth collection.

So, at his suggestion I’ve set up the BarCamp Perth page, and am hoping a few people might offer to help. We’ll also need a venue, and if possible some sponsorship. Anyone with ideas? Pop over to the BarCamp Perth page, add yourself, and make any suggestions (or flick me an email).
