Do you get your 2 and 5?

Comment Published at 03:2303:234 comments4 comments18 Visits18 VisitsReport

2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of veg, that is.  This came about after DD's teacher approached me and said she hadn't been packed a single piece of fruit in her lunch box for a couple of days at Prep.  I assured her teacher that really, she was getting all she needed over the day.  She was having a fruit smoothie in the morning using 2 bananas and a tub of mango yoghurt.  In her lunch box she was having raw vegies such as carrot, celery, beans, cucumber and so on which meant she was having vegetables through the day as well as with her evening meal, as our evening meal is never large.

It got me thinking, though, do you get your 2 and 5 each day?

Re: Do you get your 2 and 5?

Yes we do. I get the same at my house Annie. Need to cut them up still when the boys are here and they are teenagers. Go figure. Watermelon and big fruit mainly or it will rot. I think it is just because they are too lazy to do it. Got to admit if it takes effort a lot of us would rather not prepare it. My boys would rather starve til mum gets home. groan!

Re: Do you get your 2 and 5?

bananas dont last in our household they never have 5 kilos is not uncommon for me to but mandarines in winter they dont last! has to be the ones with the loose skin.

we are fortunate to have an orange tree but i have to cut these on a plate and leave them on the bench and they disappear in no time same as the apples if they sit in the fruit basket they dont get touched!!!!

no my children are not little 26 29 and hubby!!!! all males.

They will do chores around the house but prefer their fruit cut up for them Go figure!!!

but then again i remember before i got married how much better and tastier they appearedwhen my mum did this!!!

my older son has always been a cucumber fanatic! tomatoes too! although home grown are the best. we are entering spring soon so our vegie patch will increase. i have siverbeet growing chinese spinach parsley  all greens all full of iron.

so i can safely say my family gets more than enough.

love annie

Re: Do you get your 2 and 5?

In the UK they just say "5 a day" and that can be any combination. I filled in a government questionnaire and was embarrassed to realise it had been a "bad" day, as I know DD1 usually eats her 5 a day (unlike DD2 who has to make up some of her 5 a day with a fruit juice and some houmous because she's so fussy). Half of me thinks "well done" to the teacher for noticing and the other half thinks "stop being so nosy"!
