Children of the streets

Comment Published at 10:0810:084 comments4 comments33 Visits33 VisitsReport

We just got back from a couple of days in another city, doing training for carers at a home for 12 children aged 5 to 12, all of whom have lived on the streets in the past.  The training went really well. The carers were inspired to help build the children's very low self-esteem.

We also got to spend time with the children. They are so hungry for attention and affection. Last evening we had 14 of them (including the house parent's two children) wanting us to give them personal attention all at once. It got a bit chaotic. At times we wished we were 14 people instead of just two. They are always so grateful for anything you do for them, however small.

They have material things as a result of the charity. What is missing for them is often years of lack of loving care.

Wow so young to be out on the streets. Keep up the good work. What interesting lives you have and what a great way to travel the world.

Re: Children of the streets

I applaude your caring vocation. I worked for many years, with the Adults, that were once homeless and poverty stricken as children. Not in a poor Country, but here in Britain. One thing these Men and Women held dear in their hearts was the little kindness and affections that were, meted out by people like yourselves. They never forgot, the hug, the smile, the words of affection, even from a stranger. As one young, woman said, "It kept me hoping, that one day, some way, there would be someone to love me". I never forgot those words. They also horrified me. She was so broken, when she was brought to us, but a little flicker of hope, remained in her heart. That little light was ignited by people like you, and she grew well and strong and found love. She is now married with three children, who will thankfully, never know rejection or true lonliness, like their mum. You are so needed. Thank you for the reminder. It is very easy to take the love and affection that has alway's surrounded me, for granted.

Luv. Winnie.xx
