A five-year old vampire

This week marked my fifth anniversary in parenting. My rookie baby is five years old.

This means that it was exactly five years ago that the story that Heather and I like to tell about our concurrent pregnancies occurred. I was in labor at the hospital, and when the nurse notified the doctor, who was across the street seeing patients at her office, to head over to my L&D room to check on the baby’s heart rate, it was Heather who was left sitting on the exam table.

It was five years ago that Ryan and I met our son.

iPhone apps to edutain your preschooler

Irony alert: I don’t let my kids play video games and I limit their TV screen time, but I’m usually willing to hand over my iPhone to pass the time.

I realized that I was a huge hypocrite on a recent flight from San Francisco to Cleveland when we let Holden (now 4) watch the entire Toy Story movie on the airplane, then we let Milo (precious little 2 1/2) watch the movie next.

Afterward, we felt a little better worse mixed-up about tossing the iPhone into the back seat during long car-rides around town. But we ...
