Spank Out Day

This post is from from my other blog here

Spanking Spanking or the use of physical discipline is a hot topic amongst many parents.  I've already given my thoughts on the matter in a previous post.  I won't regurgitate all that information again, so if you want to check it out, click here.  The post includes some things to consider as well as some links that provide more information, research and points of view on the matter.

As a parent, social worker and parent coach, I am always looking for ways to help parents find effective ways to discipline their children.  Let's face it, it is one of the most difficult tasks of raising children.  Many parents over the years have shared that they have used physical discipline as a last resort.  When asked, they almost always shared their regret or frustration as well as a desire to find a different way to handle their child's behavior that left them feeling better as a parent.

Given this, you can imagine my delight to be asked to join forces with the staff from the Institute for Global Education in the first ever Grand Rapids Spank Out Day!  On April 30th, parents and caregivers are being asked to refrain from the use of spanking or corporal punishment.  The goal of the program is to provide information and education to parents on non-violent discipline methods.  You can read more about their efforts as well as the calendar of events by clicking here

For those of you in the Grand Rapids area, I will be part of a panel discussion on Peaceful Parenting this Thursday, April 17th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.   The discussion will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church which is located at 1100 Lake Dr. SE.  Come on out and join the discussion.  I hope to see you there!

How about you?  What are your thoughts on the topic?  Will you make the commitment and join in on Spank Out Day?  Post your comments, thoughts and commitment!

Re: Spank Out Day

Hi! Read your blog(directed to in present blog) and are you against or for, as you do not state. I read it and with my leanings decided you are against.  I believe that spanking comes out of a lack of resourses as to know a different approach. I,being older, come from the back ground of living in a neighbourhood were punishment was handed out in the form of the hand, belts and beatings. My Mother was against this and although I received punishment from my Father and school, I did not feel that this was the way my family would be handled. Our kiddies were raised and not spanked. I had wonderful teenage years and am glad that we did not spank. I felt spanking hurt who I was to the core. The school ones hurt my self respect and being. This should be remembered by any parent that spanks. Fear and moral injury will do nothing to make a better human.

Re: Spank Out Day

Well said!  I couldn't agree more with you on all points.  I have had the same experience, ie, that most parents who resort to spanking do so due to a lack of other resources.  Hopefully, Spank Out Day will help give those parents some other tools to put in their parenting tool box.  Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
