Re: Our judicial system is failing to protect children
It is very disturbing that these things happen in our communities. Being near the Sunshine Coast, I do feel a little less safe knowing this happened practically in my own back yard.
However. nothing is ever black and white. There are many factors that are to be taken into consideration when sentencing is passed on any offender of any crime. Generally speaking, a child abuser is a victim too. They would have been abused themselves as a child, and probably through much of their life, so it is no wonder they in turn abuse other children- it was what they were taught.
The media only ever wants us to hear words like 'evil', or 'saddistic', but they never want the public to know the true facts- abuse is a cycle, and abusers are victims too.
I am planning to become a criminal psychologist so I can be a part of the solution to breaking the cycles of abuse. While I don't like the crimes, I still think it is important that someone understands the rational of the perpetrators, so that preventative measures can be put in place.
If everyone lived in fear, and protected their children with vigilante style groups etc etc, then the world would be a completely terrifying place to live.
Noone is perfect. Noone should expect another person to be perfect, and everyone should be given the opportunity to learn how to become a person, regardless of their past. Tolerance breeds understanding, which helps to break these vicious cycles.
