Kids and the Internet

yellowrotar by yellowrotar Walking(October 2008) (rank 481st)

Over the past few years, we have seen a huge increase in the popularity of the internet. But we all have heard stories about sexual predators and cyber bullies etc. So i thought i might offer some advice on these topics which could help out fellow parents.

I think

its important that kids know that you are in control of the compute, not them. You must make yourself the administrator and give them only user access. Just so they cant make too many changes, such as installing any unwanted software.

Locate the computer in an open part of the house. Most kids iwll be very curious and you dont want them viewing certain sites. So by having the computer in an open part of the house, it will reduce the chances of this happening.

Another tip is to use a filter, this will provide a great safeguard so you can block ceertain sites, aswell as have approved sites. The government even has a free approved filter at www.netalert.gov.au

Another great tip i learnt from an old boss of mine, was to create your own myspace or facebook account. that way, you can check your kids own accounts (because these sites need you to have an account to view others) just so you can get familiarised with there social network etc. Some may say this is spying, but its a great idea to keep an eye out for them.

Good luck!

Re: Kids and the Internet

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing this info with us all . . . I myself have strict rules for when my 9 yr old is on the computer . . She is only allowed 30mins on weekdays and 1 hours on weekends and I am always in the same room . . She does get extra time for researching things for school projects but once again I am close by . . .

Nothing can protect my child as good as my watchful eye, although I do have the gov program on my computer for those just in case times.

Cheers Kellz

Re: Kids and the Internet

this is an excellent idea about getting your own myspace etc. to keep an eye out. I wouldnt worry about what other people think if they call it spying. It's our children we are trying to protect. And with any online site the fact is that anyone can access is, even your own parents! Maybe if kids get to know this they will take more care in who they interact with.
