febrile convulsions 3 out of 4 of my kids experience

rcp-432 by rcp-432 Standing(October 31st) (rank 500+)

this may be graphic in details but its the only way i can explain how my kids febrile convulsions occurred

on the day connor had his febrile convulsion i had noticed that morning he was harder to wake up than usual and had a tiny raised tempreture  i

just put it down to him  maybe coming up with a cold but thought i might take him to the doctor within a hour  because it takes us a bit of time as i have no car and at the time had three kids  under 3 to try and  get on a bus plus me , my partner and a triple pram .

so while we were waiting for a bus to go into town , since there was a mcdonalds right behind were the bus stop is,  we stopped into mcdonalds to grab something for the boys and while we were  all eating  my partner said to me "whats wrong with connor " so once i looked over at connor i noticed his eyes were looking up and to the right  and his head was like it had been glued to his right shoulder  and his right hand  was clenched and twitching once i noticed this i picked up  my son and then his whole body started to convulse so i got connor  into the recovery position  and  got my partner to call an ambulance  .

while he was doing that i noticed connors  breathing had slowed right down to the point were his lips going blue  so i started to  do something i had been taught  through courses  and i began doing something called DR ABC

D-danger = is anyone in danger

R-response=is the person responding ,  if not place in recovery position

A-airway =is the airway clear and open ?clear mouth and tilt head back

B-breathing=can you hear or feel the person breathing ? if not , give 2 effective breaths ( adult: 15 breaths /minute) (child or infant  20 breaths/min )

C-circulation= are there signs of circulation?if absent start cpr

a couple of other people inside mcdonalds noticed what was going on and one father ran up to me and said " is your child choking i can help in any way" i said "thank you for trying to help but hes not choking he is having a seizure my partner has called an ambulance already and is talking to them so can you please grab me a cool facewasher or something to put on my sons head, please" and this kind guy and his son ran around maccas and found me one while i tried to strip connor down a bit to help drop his tempreture slowly so i put the facewasher on his forhead .his brothers raymond (who is autistic and non verbal was sitting next to me trying also to make his brother breath by slapping his leg and my other son patrick was rubbing his hand (they must of sensed somthing was wrong with there brother and tried to help ) so i was also praising them for helping their brother

and  so i got my partner to tell the ambulance person on the phone what was happening and they said try  making sure his mouth was clear  and tilting his head back so we did as we were told and he then started breathing again  and then seemed as if he fallen asleep and had  also had begun snoring.  we told the ambulance officers this

when they arrived  they said that is normal after having a seizure  but since he had been in my arms at the time of the siezure  and laying on my legs in the recovery position they didnt want to move him so they brought a stretcher over to were i was and they all lifted me onto it and strapped me to it after placing an oxygen mask on him  i said to my partner after he got of the phone to call one of our friends that had a car and tell him to come and get him and connor as i would take raymond with me  because our friend had only a car seat at the time that only patrick would fit into so he did  so the ambulance officers stapped raymond ina seat and wheeled connor and me into the back of the ambulance and then my partner said he would meet us at the hospital then the ambulance drove as fast as it could to our local hospital and once they got us there they sat raymond on the stretcher with me and connor and wheeled us inside at this time raymond laid with his brother and wouldnt let him go  so then we got wheeled into a big room where they laid connor on a big bed and started covering him in monitors and breathing devices then my partner and patrick arrived so we all stayed with connor none of us wanted to leave him .

i was still in shock but i knew we had done the right things then the doctors sedated him and had him booked in for a mri  to make sure what was going on because most children when they have a febrile convulsion they have their whole body start convulsing at once but since connor didnt do that they reckon he had one just on the right side of his brain which was concerning for them  so they did many tests and urine test and had to wait for them to all come back

so then we were told connor was to be admitted to the childrens ward for the night for observation  so i stayed the night with him and my partner looked after raymond and patrick   i stayed in phone contact with them to give updates and since the next day all test come back ok he was allowed to go home but had to go to our local gp in 3 days  and get him to have a check up   all was fine

i should add if the child throws up the  liquid panadol suppositories do work aswell  and you should also always carry panadol with you as you may be out and it happens again or your childs temp may rise and if you have it with you it makes it quicker to administer it   to your child

also i found out that small head injuries can also set off a febrile convulsion so watch out for that too. once your child starts having a seizure time it . if it is the first time your child has had a febrile convulsion ring an ambulance immeadiatly .

DO NOT STICK YOUR FINGERS IN THERE MOUTH

ROLL THEM IN THE RECOVERY POSITION

STRIP THEM DOWN

GET A COOL FACE WASHER

IF YOU ARE ALONE NEVER LEAVE YOUR CHILD WHILE YOU GO TO GRAB THE FACE WASHER  WHILE  THEIR FITTING TAKE YOUR CHILD WITH YOU

TIME THE SEIZURE

CALL THE AMBULANCE

AND AFTER THE SEIZURE YOU MAY SEE YOUR CHILD SLEEPING THIS IS NORMAL AS HAVING A SEIZURE IS LIKE RUNNING A MARATHON FOR CHILD SO THEY WILL BE EXAUSTED  .

there is going to be a 2nd and third part to this as two more of my children have had the similair events happen so they will be of there stories

Oh wow.

No wonder your such as strong woman; with this kinda thing being where you get your excercise! WOW.

and congrats for handling it so good. It sounds like this wasn't the first one you'd dealt with... I gather that the other kids had had them by then?
